About the Role

This is a seasonal position within the Parks & Recreation Department. Hours of operation are 7:00am - 3:30pm. All scheduled shifts will occur within that window of time. Employment with the City of Pocatello is contingent on passing a background check.

Placement on the Seasonal Pay Scale and associated steps relate directly to position, qualifications, and experience with the City of Pocatello.

This position requires applicants to be 16 years of age or older. The work environment includes indoor conditions, outdoor weather conditions, wet and humid conditions, areas with dust, odors, mist, gases, or other airborne matter, and exposure to mechanical hazards. Employees will drive a vehicle as part of this position and may work days, evenings, and weekends as required.

Responsibilities

Perform manual, skilled, and unskilled labor in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of grounds and facilities at and around City parks/facilities and on or adjacent to public rights-of-way. Perform general construction, maintenance, and repairs to a wide array of City buildings and infrastructure.

Maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, organizations, and the general public.
Operate vehicles safely and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Utilize hand and power tools in a safe manner.

Position Levels and Duties

This position has three possible levels, each with its own skills, responsibilities, and rate of pay. Placement is based on experience and will be discussed at the time of offer.

Construction Laborer I (P02)

Performs minor landscaping and construction duties using small hand tools.
Limited small equipment operation on landscape and other construction projects, typically under direct supervision.
Clean-up of brush and tree limbs by feeding them into a chipper, limited minor pruning.
New, first-season employee with limited/minimal experience.

Construction Laborer II (P03)

Possesses experience in and basic knowledge of construction skills necessary to assist in construction of park amenities and other assigned duties, including plumbing, pouring and finishing cement, and use of small hand and power tools (e.g., chain saws).
Basic carpentry and operation of a mini-excavator and skid steer, including loading onto and unloading from a trailer.

Construction Laborer III (P04)

Possesses above-average knowledge, skill, and experience in construction and related tasks, performing duties with little to no supervision.
Large equipment operation such as backhoe, front-end loader, and non-CDL dump trucks.
Pouring and finishing cement, using small hand and power tools, and carpentry.
Daily reporting of assigned job completion status to supervisor.
Responsible for driving City vehicles and trailers, as well as loading and transporting large equipment to various sites.

Requirements

Applicant must be 16 years of age or older.
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Two to five years of experience may be required; specialized certifications, construction, and/or supervisory experience may also be required.
Idaho Driver’s license is required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered.

Physical Requirements

Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, and work at heights or in confined spaces.
Requires hand/finger dexterity to handle materials and manipulate tools.
Must be able to reach with hands and arms.
