Construction Instructor

About the Role

The Construction Instructor will manage the NCCER Certification process for students in the construction pathway, ensuring adherence to all requirements for industry-recognized credentials, including OSHA 10 and NCCER Core. This role involves maintaining records, submitting documentation, and guiding students through the certification process. The instructor will also model and teach employability and soft skills essential for employment in the construction sector while fostering effective communication as part of the school team.

Responsibilities

• Teach workplace safety using approved curricula to award OSHA-10 Basic Safety certification.
• Implement and adhere to the construction laboratory safety plan, including procedures for reporting accidents/injuries.
• Develop and coordinate a pacing guide aligned with NCCER curricula to ensure students gain construction skills and achieve industry credentials.
• Create a supportive and optimistic learning environment with active student engagement.
• Engage students in functional construction activities using varied instructional methods (group work, hands-on activities, multimedia).
• Coordinate with academic teachers to provide learning accommodations while maintaining student dignity, respect, and privacy.
• Guide students in developing construction craft skills, emphasizing employability and soft skills (teamwork, communication, accountability, resiliency).
• Incorporate project-based and problem-based learning to build critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Maintain proactive, open communication with the school team regarding student participation, performance, and well-being.
• Mentor and advise students on workforce skills needed for employment in the construction sector.
• Build relationships with construction industry partners to create employment opportunities for graduates.
• Provide required performance reports and participate in relevant meetings, workshops, or committees.
• Maintain a detailed tracking system to ensure timely completion of certification processes.
• Update the "Progress Tracker" weekly for each credential.
• Complete Credit Flex Plans for students to award academic credits.
• Ensure students are enrolled in the correct DASL course.
• Facilitate certification testing and provide copies of earned certifications to the Placement Specialist for student portfolios.
• Assist in securing Workforce Experience (WEX) opportunities and align classroom learning with WEX placements.
• Participate in the Quarterly Workforce Advisory Committee as needed.
• Support recruitment and retention efforts, focusing on attendance and certification completion.

Requirements

• No restrictions in securing an Ohio Department of Education vocational teacher license or permit.

Qualifications

• Experience Preferred:
  • Minimum of 5 years in construction or a construction-related field.
  • Proficiency with NCCER preferred.
• Education Preferred:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Working Conditions

This role is primarily performed in a craft classroom/laboratory environment but may extend to in-field learning opportunities.

Physical Requirements

The position involves typical physical activities associated with a construction/craft learning environment, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and operating hand/power tools. Reasonable accommodations will be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Occasional, minimal guidance is provided; the role follows established work methods. No direct reports are associated with this position.
