Responsibilities
- Inspect and verify construction work for compliance with plans, specifications, NYSDOT and NYSTA standards, applicable codes, and safety requirements.
- Verify compliance with quality standards and environmental regulations.
- Observe construction activities across various types of projects including highway and bridge work, buildings and facilities, rail and transit infrastructure, and municipal capital projects.
- Identify nonconforming work and coordinate corrective actions.
- Prepare daily inspection reports, photographs, and progress documentation.
- Measure, calculate, and verify quantities for materials installed, delivered, or stored.
- Witness and document required materials testing.
- Review and process project documentation including submittals and RFIs.
- Aid in the preparation of meeting minutes, issue tracking, and field documentation.
- Coordinate with the Resident Engineer, project staff, contractors, NYSDOT and NYSTA representatives, rail owners, municipalities, and agencies.
- Participate in coordination meetings and follow up on action items.
- Maintain jobsite safety by monitoring compliance with OSHA, DOT requirements, MPT, and promoting adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols.
Requirements
- Field inspection experience on transportation, buildings, rail, or civil construction projects.
- Ability to interpret plans, specifications, codes, and contract documents.
- Familiarity with construction manuals and digital documentation systems such as AASHTOWare, COMPASS, ProjectWise, and SharePoint.
- Proficiency in performing accurate field measurements and quantity calculations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering Technology, or related field.
- OR High School Diploma and a NICET Level I.
- Preferred NICET Level II or higher, ACI, NETTCP, ATSSA certifications, OSHA 10 Hour or 30 Hour, and relevant trade licenses, project dependent.
- Experience on NYSDOT and NYSTA projects preferred.
Physical and Working Conditions
- Ability to work in active construction environments, including uneven terrain, heights, excavations, and varied weather conditions.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, or off hours for traffic shifts, building shutdowns, or rail outages.
