Construction Inspector I/II/Associate - Department of Transportation

The Department of Transportation (DOT) plans, develops, operates, and maintains transportation facilities, services, and related systems which contribute to the livability and economic health of the City. We comprise a team of more than 500 people ready to serve the needs of our residents to improve the efficiency and safety of San José streets.

About the role

The Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill multiple vacancies in the Infrastructure Maintenance division. Salary ranges for these classifications include an approximate five percent ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary will be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

• Construction Inspector I: $78,514.80 – $95,659.20
• Construction Inspector II: $88,866.96 - $108,217.20
• Associate Inspector: $100,332.96 - $121,954.56

Responsibilities

• Contract management, spending/tracking budget appropriations, and contractor coordination efforts
• Reviewing and verifying accuracy of invoices
• Preparing documents to pay contractor invoices
• Visually inspecting projects
• Validating work of contractors in the field
• Maintaining daily inspection logs and photos
• Ensuring all work is completed according to City of San Jose standards and specifications
• Coordinating new projects with Public Works inspectors and DOT’s structure & Landscape Designer
• Mitigating conflicts with residents, businesses, and contractors

Requirements

Possession of a valid State of California driver's license.

• Construction Inspector I: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate).
• Construction Inspector II: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) and two (2) years of construction trades or construction inspection experience.
• Associate Construction Inspector: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) and four (4) years of construction trades or construction inspection experience, including two (2) years in any combination of the following: construction or infrastructure inspection, drafting or reviewing plans and specifications, materials sampling and testing, traffic engineering, or surveying.

Acceptable Substitution: Completion of an Associate Degree in engineering technology, construction management, or closely related field from an accredited junior college or two (2) years of college coursework in engineering technology or related subjects may be substituted for two (2) years of the construction trades or construction inspection experience.
