Construction Inspector
Summary Construction Inspectors inspect, observe, and document construction and maintenance projects; performing tests on soils and materials. Work is performed under the supervision of a Project Engineer. In most cases, an Inspector's day-to-day direct supervisor may be a client’s direct employee.
Under the MDOT organization, Construction Inspectors have many categories that range from TET 1 to a TET 5, TE 1 to TE 5, and TEM 1&2. Under Baltimore City organization, Construction Inspectors have many categories that range from PWI 1 to 3 and CPS 1 to 3. Under County and other local government agencies, Construction Inspectors have many categories that range from an entry-level inspector to a senior inspector.
All Inspectors are required to travel and be available to work in any part of the State, subject to change of assignments, as work requires. We work when the contractor works. Inspectors are required to have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Inspectors must also be able to work night shift when required.
Responsibilities
- Performs field inspections of construction and maintenance projects and of existing roadways, structures, and facilities.
- Conducts and/or observes and documents tests on soils, asphalt, concrete, aggregates, bituminous products, metal products, and industrial coatings.
- Responds to Districts Office’s data requests.
- Participates in traffic control activities.
- Obtains the following MARTCP certifications: Concrete, Soils & Aggregates, HMA, and Pavement Markings.
- Obtains the MDE Responsible Personnel Card (RPC), SHA Yellow Card, and MDOT Temporary Traffic Control Manager Card.
- Fills out the Inspector's Daily Report (IDR) which memorializes all labor, equipment, and material used on the project each day.
- Maintains daily progress photos of the work.
- Fills out Force Account records when there is an unresolved change, but the changed work still must be performed.
- Maintains a Sketchbook that contains a variety of construction documentation.
- Participates in the reconciliation of pay quantities on progress payments submitted by the Contractor.
- Attends all meetings, as needed and appropriate.
- When appropriate, participates in change order negotiations.
- When appropriate, participates in CPM schedule meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma / GED required.
- Valid Driver's License.
