About the role
We are seeking highly motivated Construction Inspectors to provide services in St. Mary's County, MD. Current openings are for inspectors with experience in roads, bridges and culverts, paving, drainage and storm water facilities, water and sewer utilities, and building construction, specifically mechanical/electrical installations.
Responsibilities
- Inspect the work of contractors on highway, street, bridge, conduits, water and wastewater systems facilities, or other minor construction projects to ensure compliance with specifications, standards, and codes.
- Maintain a daily inspection log.
- Perform field tests on materials (e.g., slump test, air content test, dye test) and record results; take samples of construction materials and forward them to the laboratory.
- Identify damaged conduits, document the nature of the problem, and facilitate locating intact conduits.
- Inspect excavation and fill operations, placement of forms for concrete, concrete mixing and pouring, and asphalt paving.
- Draw, read, and interpret diagrams and sketches of inspection sites, including the location of utilities and obstructions.
- Monitor contractor’s work for conformance to design plans, specifications, and general permit requirements.
- Track daily quantities, complete daily inspection reports, review payment requisitions, and maintain field sketchbooks and as-built drawings.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or State Equivalency Certificate.
- Minimum of five years of specific field construction inspection experience in one or more of the following categories:
- Building construction (new and renovations), including maintenance facilities, garages, and office/administrative buildings.
- Roadway and bridge construction, including related storm drainage and stormwater management (SWM) facilities.
- Water and wastewater treatment plants, including pumping stations.
- Water and sewer pipeline construction, including pipeline rehabilitation and in-situ repair technologies.
- Underground utility construction, including installation of electrical conduits, manholes, fiber optic cables, and related new construction or rehabilitation projects.
- Sediment and erosion control certifications (e.g., Green/Yellow Card) required.
- MARTCP, NICET, VDOT, ACI, WACEL, or NASSCO certifications (e.g., Concrete, Asphalt, Soils & Aggregate, Manholes/Pipelines, C-900) are desirable.
- Certification in Temporary Traffic Control required for contracts involving monitoring contractor MOT or lane closures.
- Confined Space Certification required for all manhole/pipeline inspection assignments.
- Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle for travel to and from assigned construction sites.
- Good communication skills and the ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
- Writing and drawing skills necessary to complete inspection reports and sketchbooks.
- Basic computer skills (Word & Excel) for completing electronic inspection reports.
- Familiarity with construction management software (e.g., Primavera Construction Management or CPM scheduling software).
Skills
- Knowledge of construction methods and procedures.
