Construction Inspector
About the role
Congestion Consulting & Engineering (ICE) is seeking Construction Inspectors to support various transportation projects with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). The role involves monitoring construction activities, inspecting materials and structures, and ensuring compliance with project specifications.
Responsibilities
- Provide daily observation of construction activities and document activities on required reports/forms.
- Review construction materials for contract and specification compliance.
- Inspect roadways and structures for conformance to plans and specifications.
- Evaluate structural materials, placement of culverts, and structural operations such as foundation excavation.
- Maintain accurate calculations and computations.
- Sample and test construction materials to ensure they meet quality requirements.
- Document and immediately report any non-compliance actions and safety violations to your immediate supervisor.
- Record Daily Work Reports to include quantities in Site Manager and for AASTHO projects.
Qualifications
- Above average math and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
- Adaptability to new technologies and quick learning of computer skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
- Legal authorization to work in the US.
- Current driver’s license with a safe driving record.
Requirements
- HS diploma required or equivalent.
- Associate or BS in Civil Engineering is a plus.
- One to ten years of inspection experience.
- One to three of the following certifications are required:
- SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician
- SCDOT Earthwork Drainage & Base Technician
- SCDOT Concrete Level 1 and Level 2
- ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician – Grade 1
Physical Demands
The position requires minimal lifting of up to 50 pounds sometimes on a frequent basis. The employee must be able to travel and tour work sites under adverse environmental conditions, including loud noise levels, high dust and dirt, and extreme temperatures. The employee must be able to visually examine construction materials and finished structures and work in various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites, and heavy equipment.
Hours of Work
This position is full-time (40 hours per week). The CEI office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing one unpaid hour for lunch each day. While overtime is generally not anticipated, occasional projects or deadlines may necessitate additional hours, compensated at time and a half. Work schedules may vary based on project demands, some night and weekend work may be required.

Pay Range
$18 - $40 per hour
