Duties & Responsibilities
- Attends pre-construction meetings.
- Prepares a written daily report documenting construction activities.
- Prepares a timesheet daily which records all hours worked.
- Consults with Resident Engineers, Bridge Engineers, Project Engineers, other project representatives, and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems.
- Coordinates field testing of construction materials and construction surveys.
- Captures daily project photos.
- Coordinates communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
- Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans for compliance with approved safety standards.
- Performs construction record-keeping activities; recommends payments to contractors; prepares reports.
- Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
Skills/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in roadway construction inspection of roadways mandatory.
- Strong communication, verbal and written are required.
- Basic computer skills required. Microsoft Word, Excel.
- Caltrans or other Public Agency Experience, highly desired.
- CHST Certification preferable.
- Knowledge of Caltrans and Local Agency Standard Plans and Specifications and Greenbook.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- Regularly required to sit for up to 6 to 8 hours per day while working at a computer, during meeting or while driving.
- Frequently required to walk up to 2 hours per day while performing field visits.
- Frequent use of hands, repetitive reaching, repetitive hand use.
- Physical agility to perform tasks requiring a full range of body movements including lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching, squatting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, or assuming crouched positions.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Available for after hour emergency response.
