Duties & Responsibilities
- Attends pre-construction meetings.
- Prepares a written daily report documenting construction activities, including but not limited to: contractor labor, equipment, daily construction progress, project site visitors, non-conforming work, safety issues, traffic control, field measured quantiles, field discussions with the contractor and public, takes daily project photos, change order work performed, and weather.
- Prepare a timesheet daily which records all hours worked, along with vacation, holidays, and sick leave taken.
- Consults with Resident Engineers, Bridge Engineers, Project Engineers, other project representatives, and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems.
- Prepares quantity calculation sheets to support monthly progress payments to construction contractors.
- Covers field testing of construction materials and construction surveys.
- Covers communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
- Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Maintains project phasing and traffic control plans for compliance with approved safety standards.
- Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
- Performs construction record-keeping activities; recommends payments to contractors; prepares reports.
- Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Skills/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in roadway construction inspection of roadways mandatory.
- Strong communication, verbal and written are required.
- Basic computer skills required. Microsoft Word, Excel.
- Caltrans or other Public Agency Experience, highly desired.
- Knowledge of Caltrans and Local Agency Standard Plans and Specifications and Greenbook.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to sit for up to 6 to 8 hours per day while working at a computer, during meeting or while driving.
- Walking up to 2 hours per day while performing field visits.
- Ability to see well enough to function in a typical office environment and read standard text on paper and electronic screen of a computer or handheld device.
- The associate frequently is required to use hands. Repetitive reaching, repetitive hand use.
- Physical agility to perform tasks requiring a full range of body movements including lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching, squatting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, or assuming crouched positions.
- Frequently use safety equipment such as a hard hat and safety vest; work in areas not well ventilated such as utility vaults; work outdoors or work on uneven ground or floor spaces; work at elevations above ground level and on marine vessels/structures.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions and can work any day of the week both night and day.
- Available for after hour emergency response.
