Construction Inspector
About the role
GAI Consultants, Inc. is seeking an experienced Construction Inspector to join their team. This position will serve as a Construction Inspector reporting to the Project Supervisor or Resident Project Representative on various Transportation projects throughout Indiana.
Responsibilities
- Perform construction observation and inspection on a variety of Transportation projects throughout Indiana.
- Interact with clients, contractors, and the public in meetings and other communication forms.
- Provide documentation of construction progress through daily reports, status reports, and other forms of data reporting.
- Review plans and specifications in preparation for field observations on construction sites.
- Conduct tests and investigations in the field or laboratory to obtain data used by engineering and technical personnel in determining physical properties of construction materials.
- Collect soil, asphalt, and concrete samples, prepare samples for testing, record data, and prepare summary reports.
- Document field activities, observations, and testing results on projects.
- Use specialized equipment and apparatus to prepare analyses, reports, and / or technical drawings.
- Communicate field and laboratory testing results with staff, contractors, and clients.
- Begins to lead tasks when necessary.
Requirements
- Previous municipal utility inspections (water, sanitary and stormwater) are a must.
- Requires knowledge of transportation construction and quality control practices.
- Must be knowledgeable in the Indiana Department of Transportation, Indianapolis Department of Public Works or other governmental agency specifications, standards and inspection requirements.
- Read and interpret construction plans, drawings and other technical documents.
- Inspect work of contractors and document project progress and quality of work.
- Ability to measure and calculate quantities of materials.
- Ability to perform material testing.
- INDOT certified technician.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outside in all kinds of weather conditions.
- Ability to lift heavy objects such as testing equipment and materials samples.
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain and navigate steps, stairs and ladders.
- Ability to work in hazardous environments and use required Personal Protective Equipment.
- Environment will include dust, noise, tripping, and overhead hazards.
General Characteristics
- Begins to develop advanced field operations skills.
- Possesses computer skills, good visual and hearing skills, follows procedures; good organizational skills.
- Works in weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, etc.).
- Works with safety in mind, must be flexible with work hours and willingness to travel up to 100% during the week days and occasional weekend travel and/or work.
- Able to lift and carry between 25 and 50 lbs. routinely.
- Able to walk for lengthy periods.
Education
- H.S Graduate
- Certification/Licensure: INDOT certified technician.
