Construction Inspector
About the role
This role focuses on providing construction administration, inspection, and testing services for a wide range of civil infrastructure projects, including roadway and bridge, water and wastewater, aviation, commercial, and municipal utility and infrastructure projects. The Construction Inspector reads and interprets project drawings and specifications, performs field inspections and testing, and helps ensure that contractors meet all quality standards, plans, and specifications.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret project drawings, specifications, blueprints, and related documents for a variety of construction projects.
- Perform construction administration and inspection services for state, county, and local roadway and bridge projects, as well as municipal utility and infrastructure projects.
- Monitor and enforce quality standards and specifications on active construction sites.
- Inspect construction projects to verify contractor compliance with state specifications, plans, and proposals for roadway and bridge work.
- Verify plan quantities and calculations to ensure they align with bid plans and contract documents.
- Prepare and maintain accurate project records, logs, and reports in a timely and organized manner.
- Notify the contractor and/or project engineer about project status updates and any non-conforming work observed in the field.
- Support or possibly conduct hazardous material surveys and provide asbestos abatement monitoring services during abatement projects, as needed.
- Perform quality control testing at project sites, including testing of concrete, soils, masonry, asphalt, aggregate, and reinforcing steel.
- Communicate effectively with project engineers, project managers, contractors, and other stakeholders to address issues and maintain project progress.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the project engineer or project manager to support successful project delivery.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of construction inspection experience on civil construction projects.
- Familiarity with highway construction specifications and prior field experience in transportation or civil infrastructure projects.
- Minimum of 2 INDOT certifications.
- Ability to successfully complete and pass a drug screening and background check.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to communicate effectively with project teams and contractors.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and blueprints.
- Experience with construction inspection practices and procedures for civil projects.
- Basic understanding of construction management principles and field documentation requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Possession of 6 INDOT certifications is a strong plus.
- Previous experience working for a construction materials testing or inspection company.
- Experience with concrete, asphalt, earthwork, and utility construction engineering services, including inspection and testing.
- Experience with field and laboratory testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, masonry, structural steel, and fireproofing.
- Preferred certifications include ACI Grade I, DOT Asphalt Technician, NICET Level II Soils, ICC Special Inspections, and/or CWI/NDT inspector credentials.
- Demonstrated ability to apply creative problem-solving skills in the field to address construction issues.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain thorough and accurate project records and reports.
Work Environment
The position is field-based and requires working outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the year. The role typically involves working 50 to 60 hours per week, which may include extended days and occasional weekend work depending on project needs. The Construction Inspector regularly works on active construction sites such as roadways, bridges, utilities, and other civil infrastructure, and uses standard field testing equipment and tools for materials testing (e.g., for concrete, soils, asphalt, aggregates, masonry, reinforcing steel, and related materials).

Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $54,080.00 - $66,560.00/yr.
