Construction Health and Safety Specialist (Field Based)

About the role

ERM is hiring an experienced Construction Health and Safety Specialist to provide on-site support for a key medical device manufacturing client in North Haven, CT. In this critical role, you will observe construction activities from an EHS perspective, ensure health and safety compliance with applicable regulations and company standards, and contribute to an environment where employee health and safety are preserved. This is a part-time (3-4 days per week), limited-term role for a duration of 23 months.

Responsibilities

• Participate in regular planning meetings with engineering, general contractor, and sub-contractors
• Anticipate EHS risk associated with upcoming phases of construction, then work with contractors to develop safe work plans (e.g., crane/rigging, work from heights, electrical safety, hot work)
• Review and provide feedback for daily JSAs
• Conduct regular inspections/gembas of construction areas
• Identify how different stages of construction may impact facility operations
• Plan safe traffic patterns for PIT and pedestrian traffic (and outdoor vehicle traffic) around the construction area
• Determine appropriate PPE and safety requirements for employees visiting the construction site
• Create communications for employees impacted by construction and changing safety rules or traffic patterns
• Assess manufacturing equipment against industry and internal EHS requirements during design and validation
• Assist operations and engineering with JSAs, ergonomic assessments, lockout/tagout procedures, etc., for new and relocated manufacturing equipment
• Review and approve safety plans for rigging/installation of new and relocated equipment

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in construction management, safety, or occupational health and safety, or a related degree (preferred)
• 7+ years of on-site experience in construction-specific project health & safety
• Certification in the field: CHST, ASP, and/or CSP (preferred)
• Manufacturing or medical device project experience (highly desired)
• Strong knowledge of OSHA General Industry and construction standards
• Strong commitment to safety, including implementing strict Health & Safety protocols
• Completed training and certifications for OSHA 30-hour construction, confined space entry training, and fall protection/prevention training (preferred)
• Experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
• Ability to multitask, maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently with minimal supervision
• Excellent project delivery, client service, and organizational skills
• Ability to organize and coordinate field personnel, subcontractors, and vendors

Schedule

Part-time, 3-4 days per week for a duration of 23 months.
