Primary Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Superintendent or Lead Equipment Operator, operates a variety of heavy and light equipment in the construction and maintenance repairs of City utility installations. Operates heavy construction equipment such as front-end loader, motor grader, backhoe, trackhoe, compactor, graders or heavy trenching machines and other types of machinery to excavate, move and grade earth. *MUST have experience and be skilled with a Motor Grader.
Qualifications
- Education/Certification:
- Valid Texas Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
- High School Diploma/GED preferred
- Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to understand and follow detailed written or verbal instructions
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to correctly prioritize workload
- Experience:
- 8 + years of heavy equipment operation
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Operate construction equipment such as: bulldozer, loader, motor grader, backhoe, trackhoe, compactor, pneumatic roller, and water trucks.
- Fasten attachments to equipment with clevis or wedge pin hitches.
- Connect hydraulic hoses, belts, mechanical linkage, or power takeoff shaft to equipment to provide power to raise, lower, or tilt attachment.
- Greases, oils, and performs minor repairs on all equipment.
- Drives construction equipment over terrain to raise or lower terrain to specified grade following markings on grade stakes or hand signals.
- Follow all safety protocols and promote a safe work environment.
- Exercise good judgment when making decisions, with little supervision
Supervisory Responsibilities
May supervise others as assigned.

- Tools/Equipment Used: bulldozer, loader, motor grader, backhoe, trackhoe, compactor, pneumatic roller, and water trucks, shovels, various hand tools.
- Posture: Frequent sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, and twisting
- Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent walking, climbing; grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, pushing/pulling, use arms/legs to operate equipment for long periods of time, coordinate hand and foot movements
- Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (100 pounds) frequently, exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds and/or occasionally equivalent up to approximately 100 pounds
- Environment: Work outside on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, dirt, sewage, water. toxic chemicals and materials, noise, and vibration; bright sunlight, work around moving objects or vehicles; insects, rodents, regular exposure to high, fast moving mechanical parts.
- Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, occasional prolonged or irregular hours.
