About the Role

Learns, practices, and develops essential skills in construction techniques and supervision under the guidance of one or more Construction Managers and/or a Construction Area Manager. Develops construction superintendent skills by assisting the Construction Manager in coordinating on-site construction activities for assigned subdivisions. Assists in monitoring the completion of each construction phase through inspections, scheduling, and coordination of activities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Quality Control Inspection (QCI) process with Construction and Customer Care staff to ensure 100% complete homes at delivery.
  • Act as a liaison between Operations, Construction, Customer Care, and external agencies to ensure completion of job duties and prevent current and future service issues.
  • Ensure construction materials and workmanship are of the highest value and quality to reduce future service issues.
  • Coordinate quality assurance initiatives between construction and sales teams.
  • Perform quality inspections at various stages of the construction process.
  • Train and learn the M/I Homes Construction Process through tasks related to all construction phases, including:
    • Attending/participating in key builder/homeowner meetings (e.g., Buyer Builder Conference, New Home Orientation).
    • Assisting in the inspection of assigned homes in different phases of construction to monitor workflow, quality, and completion.
    • Reviewing and verifying blueprints for accuracy.
    • Assisting in scheduling subcontractors and monitoring completion of work, including delivery and use of materials, supplies, tools, machinery, and equipment.
  • Act as a liaison between subcontractors and construction management staff by monitoring work quality and progress, and reporting issues.
  • Perform minor repairs including paint touch-up, caulking, trim, checking appliances, and minor installations prior to pre-settlement inspections.
  • Communicate with homeowners regarding questions and concerns; analyze problems and assist in resolving customer-service issues.
  • Train and learn other key M/I Homes processes (e.g., Warranty, Customer Care, Sales & Design Center, MIFC/MIT).
  • Act on behalf of the construction superintendent in their absence.
  • Monitor and enforce safety and Company policy compliance.
  • Ensure a clean, safe work environment, including debris removal from common areas and home cleanliness.
  • Assist with special projects and perform additional duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Construction Management preferred, or at least three years of related work experience and/or training.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the home building industry, including building codes, regulations, and construction processes.

Skills

  • Knowledge of construction skills including carpentry, reading blueprints, and use of hand and power tools.
  • Technical and mechanical aptitude.
  • Customer-service oriented with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with customers, vendors, and employees from other departments.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities within budget limitations.
  • Detail-oriented with effective time management skills.
  • Working knowledge of Outlook and Build Pro is a plus.

Work Conditions

  • Exposure to undesirable environmental conditions and some health and safety risks; appropriate equipment and precautions required.
  • Travel demands requiring possession of a valid driver's license.
