Conservation Fellow
About the role
The Andrew W. Mellon Advanced Fellowship in Objects Conservation is offered by the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The position is a ten-month fellowship running from September 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023. It includes a salary of $38,000 and Emory University health and vacation benefits.
Responsibilities
- Participate fully in the varied activities of the Parsons Conservation Laboratory, including examination, treatment, preventive care, and mentoring of students and volunteers.
- Contribute to student projects through both practical supervision and classroom presentations.
- Support a developing collaboration with the Atlanta University Center’s Art History and Curatorial Studies Collective by assisting students with technical examination and condition assessment of objects from the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum and the Spelman Museum of Art.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in conservation, museum studies, or a related field, along with significant experience in objects conservation. Previous experience working in a museum setting is highly desirable.
Qualifications
The Michael C. Carlos Museum collection includes Greek and Roman, Ancient Egyptian, Near Eastern, Nubian, Ancient American, African, and Asian art, as well as a collection of works on paper from the Renaissance to the present. The Museum is located on Emory University campus in a residential neighborhood of Atlanta.
Skills
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential. Proficiency in multiple languages is a plus.
