This is a contractual, position-specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service. The recruitment may fill current and future vacancies in the same classification/function. The eligible list will be maintained for one year.

About the Role

This position serves in the Chesapeake Forest and Pocomoke State Forest projects, providing technical support in state forest management and state boundary line maintenance on Department-owned lands. The role supports the goal of inspiring Marylanders to live in harmony with nature and protect the Chesapeake Bay. Responsibilities include assisting with the Chesapeake Forest leased hunting program and performing semi-skilled work as assigned, including operating and maintaining vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Mark, post, and brush state property lines
  • Install gates on forest roads
  • Remove trash and debris dumped on property
  • Mow and brush roads
  • Maintain equipment used on state forest property
  • Assist with prescribed burns
  • Help construct forest trails
  • Operate heavy equipment (e.g., bulldozers, plows, tractors) to cut grass, remove dead trees, and haul debris

Requirements

  • One year of experience performing advanced, semi-skilled work in a State conservation agency

Qualifications

  • Current possession of a CDL driver’s license (desired)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class B State of Maryland Motor Vehicle License may be required prior to appointment

Special Requirements

  • Some positions may require a medical examination to certify ability to perform essential job functions
  • Candidates must be willing to travel and be available anywhere in the State

Benefits

  • Eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage (medical and prescription) for contractual employees working 30+ hours/week (or 130+ hours/month) under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program
  • Employee pays 25% of premiums; State subsidizes 75%
  • Optional dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance (full premium paid by employee)
  • Leave accrual: one hour for every 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours per calendar year

Schedule

  • Full-time, 40 hours/week
  • 12-month contract with possibility of renewal
