Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Product, Compliance, and Operations teams to design and launch new products by translating complex legal and regulatory requirements into practical solutions
- Advise on a broad array of legal and regulatory issues related to securities, AML/CFT, payments, consumer protection, and other business-impacting areas
- Lead regulatory initiatives, supporting reviews, audits, licensing work, policy development, and engagement with regulatory bodies
- Provide business-oriented legal advice to company leaders, helping teams manage ambiguity and make informed decisions while balancing legal, regulatory, and operational considerations
- Identify opportunities to leverage AI, automation, and scalable processes to improve legal workflows and accelerate business growth
- Support the team on a variety of other legal matters as needed, including commercial agreements, corporate governance, employment, and strategic projects
Qualifications
- Licensed lawyer in Canada with over 5 years of in-house experience, preferably in fintech, payments, financial services, or fast-moving tech
- Ability to work independently in a small team, making decisions with incomplete information
- Business-focused legal judgment: Start from business goals and help teams understand risks and options
- Comfortable advising product and operations teams, including on ambiguous legal matters
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to turn complex legal issues into clear, practical advice for non-legal stakeholders
