About the role
The Criminal Investigator position within the Erie County District Attorney's Office involves conducting criminal investigations initiated as the result of complaints or crimes. The investigator works independently and at odd hours, often as an undercover agent or collaborating with other law enforcement agencies.
Responsibilities
- Assists attorneys in preparing cases for prosecution
- Conducts assigned investigations as directed by competent authorities
- Prepares concise, complete, and accurate reports regarding investigations
- Handles evidence to ensure its admissibility in court
- Executes court orders including warrants of arrest
- Protects and secures witnesses
- Conducts physical and/or technical surveillance
- Locates and develops witnesses capable of providing legally admissible evidence
- Testifies competently and professionally in court venues
- Maintains awareness of important matters concerning law enforcement in Erie County and provides relevant information to supervisors
- Develops and maintains contacts with confidential sources
- Performs related work as required
Requirements
- Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university and eight (8) years of experience as a police officer, at least three (3) years of which included criminal investigative work experience or three (3) years of supervision of investigators
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and ten (10) years of experience as a police officer, at least three (3) years of which included criminal investigative work experience or three (3) years of supervision of investigators
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B)
Qualifications
- Possession of a Police Officer Basic Training Certificate or its equivalent issued by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council at time of appointment
- Possession of a valid New York State Driver's License at time of appointment
- Meet minimum standards on annual firearms qualification
Skills
- Thorough knowledge of procedures, methods, and techniques of criminal investigation
- Good knowledge of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Penal Law, and Code of Criminal Procedures
- Persistence in following up all leads and sound judgment in weighing evidence uncovered
- Resourcefulness in conducting investigations
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with all segments of the Criminal Justice community
- Demonstrated capacity to excel in investigative work
- Good moral and ethical character
- Industrious and able to work without close supervision
- Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
