Concrete Finisher & Maintenance Worker II

This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and future vacancies within the Public Works Department—Tulare County Resource Management Agency (RMA). The current vacancy is located at the Visalia Road Yard, 14001 Ave 256, Visalia, CA.

Schedule

Summer: 4/10’s (four 10-hour days per week)
Winter: 5/8’s (five 8-hour days per week)

Responsibilities

• Perform concrete work including setting forms, laying, finishing, and repairing concrete.
• Construct curb, gutter, sidewalk, manholes, wingwalls, and ADA ramps.
• Repair damaged culverts, bridges, and wingwalls.
• Operate light trucks for pickup and delivery of equipment.
• Assist road crews with road-related maintenance work and act as a traffic flagman.
• Maintain project site cleanliness and safety, including traffic control signing.
• Repair and place concrete for ADA ramps, sidewalks, curb and gutter, including:
  • Setting forms
  • Mixing, wheeling, and pouring concrete
  • Screeding, troweling, grooving, and edging surfaces
  • Installing truncated domes
• Operate construction and maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, water trucks, skid steers, and trailers.
• Perform hauling, loading, cutting, leveling, and packing of fill dirt for concrete and asphalt preparation.
• Read blueprints and plans; assist in establishing and setting grades for concrete form installation.
• Assist in road maintenance work as assigned.
• Perform routine service, minor adjustments, and assist in equipment repair.
• Maintain simple time, materials, and equipment maintenance records.
• Follow safety rules and regulations.
• Supervise and instruct a labor crew in simple concrete work.

Requirements

Knowledge

• Proper use of concrete hand and power tools.
• Basic math sufficient to keep time, operating, and servicing records.
• ADA accessibility requirements for concrete work.
• Operating characteristics of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
• Operating procedures, materials, and safety measures in concrete, road building, and maintenance.
• Equipment service requirements.

Skills/Abilities

• Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Operate contemporary office equipment, including computers and electronic devices.
• Operate one or more pieces of construction equipment.
• Carry out oral and written job assignments.
• Read and understand operator and service manuals.
• Set grades, forms, lay, finish, and repair concrete.
• Inspect, service, and make minor adjustments on equipment.
• Work cooperatively with other operators and maintenance personnel.
• Maintain service records.

Education

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

License or Certificate

Ability to obtain a “Class A” driver’s license with no restrictions and a tanker endorsement within two weeks prior to the expiration of the one-year probationary period. Obtaining the Class A license is a condition of employment.

• Sick Leave Accrual: 12 days per year with unlimited accumulation; 60 hours may be used for family sick leave.
• Career Incentive Pay: Additional pay based on years of service:
  • 5 years: 3% increase
  • 10 years: 2% increase (total 5%)
  • 15 years: 3% increase (total 8%)
  • 20 years: 2% increase (total 10%)
• Group Term Life Insurance and AD&D: $10,000 provided by Standard Insurance Company.
• Disability Insurance: Covered by State Disability Insurance; premium paid by employee.
• Deferred Compensation: Voluntary deferred compensation plan available.
• Annual Benefit Amount: Provided to apply toward health insurance premiums (medical, dental, vision, and life). Pro-rated and paid on a pay-period basis (24 pay periods).
