BAE Systems is seeking a highly motivated Component Engineer to join our Engineering Team, focused on DMSMS (Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages) support and Obsolescence Management for a Cloud-based application providing DMSMS services globally. The ideal candidate will proactively monitor component lifecycles, identify risks within Bills of Materials (BOMs), and develop mitigation strategies to ensure continued component availability for new design and legacy systems. This role involves collaboration with design engineers, customers, and suppliers to manage parts quality, counterfeit avoidance, and component selection, while leading an experienced obsolescence management team through a transition to state-of-the-art containerized microservices-based tools.

Responsibilities

  • Proactive Obsolescence Management: Conduct component surveillance using the Advanced Component Obsolescence Management (AVCOM) predictive tool, OEM surveys, GIDEP alerts, and other sources to forecast and mitigate DMSMS risks.
  • BOM Analysis & Scrubbing: Review and scrub Bills of Materials (BOMs) to identify obsolete, End-of-Life (EOL), or at-risk components.
  • Alternate Part Investigation: Generate comparison matrices showing the differences and similarities of parts.
  • Mitigation Strategy Development: Develop business case analyses for recommended resolutions, including last-time buys, form-fit-function replacements, alternate sourcing, or redesign efforts.
  • Counterfeit Avoidance & Compliance: Ensure counterfeit avoidance practices and compliance with industry standards (RoHS, REACH, MIL-STD).
  • Part Qualification & Selection: Support design teams in selecting preferred components and qualify new/alternate parts to ensure performance standards.
  • Vendor Liaison: Act as the technical liaison between AVCOM Engineering, suppliers, and customers to resolve production part issues.
  • Documentation: Prepare technical reports, validate technical documents and requirements, review PCN/PDN data, and manage BOM updates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or related technical field.
  • Minimum 4 years (2 years with Master’s Degree) of progressive experience in component engineering, DMSMS, or obsolescence management within the aerospace/defense industry.
  • Proficiency with DMSMS management tools (e.g., AVCOM, GIDEP, WebFLIS, SiliconExpert, IHS/Accuris) and PLM software (e.g., Agile, Windchill).
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, technical specifications, BOM structures, and military Technical Orders.
  • Proven ability to gather and analyze metrics related to obsolescence and component/logistics management.
  • Strong understanding of electronic components (ICs, passive devices) and military/industry standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with and presenting technical material to internal teams and customers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with DOD SD-22 DMSMS guidelines, AFMCI 20-105, and IEC-62402.
  • Experience in part screening, component verification, and web-scraping.
  • DoD/DAU DMSMS credential, Certified Supply Chain Professional, or similar certification.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages and methods to automate parts management processes.
  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance.

Pay

Full-Time Salary Range: $107,359 – $182,510. Individual salaries are determined by factors including business considerations, local market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications such as skills, education, and experience.
