About the role

This position supports the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH) mission by investigating workplace safety and health complaints, serious injuries, and conducting research on applicable occupational safety and health standards. The role involves contacting employers and stakeholders, and may include remote work opportunities within Arizona, contingent upon departmental needs and performance expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Access assigned Unprogrammed Activities (UPAs) in Salesforce to review employer responses to complaint items and Rapid Response Inquiries (RRIs).
  • Determine if employer responses adequately address complaint items or incident reports; contact employers for additional information if responses are incomplete.
  • Review stakeholder complaints to ensure sufficient detail and ADOSH jurisdiction; contact complainants for clarification as needed.
  • Draft complaint items following the ADOSH template while preserving the complainant’s intent and scope.
  • Receive workplace safety and health complaints via in-person, phone, or email, and enter them into Salesforce.
  • Accompany Compliance Safety Health Officers (CSHOs) on inspections, assisting in documenting hazardous conditions through interviews, notes, and photographs.
  • Support CSHOs during Opening Conferences, Walk-around inspections, and Closing Conferences.
  • Assist CSHOs post-inspection with entering details into Salesforce, generating reports, completing forms, preparing narratives, and recommending citations.
  • Contact employers for abatement information and past due abatements, updating Salesforce accordingly.
  • Prepare, send, and upload correspondence related to Unprogrammed Activities into Salesforce.
  • Track and update correspondence and matters as needed.
  • Contact complainants or stakeholders to clarify submitted information.
  • Participate in the Arizona Management System (AMS).

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the Field Operations Manual (FOM), Industrial Commission of Arizona policies and procedures, ADOSH policies, rules, and Salesforce.
  • Familiarity with OSHA standards, Arizona Revised Statutes, Arizona Administrative Codes, and consensus standards.
  • Understanding of occupational safety and health hazard recognition (e.g., unsafe trenching, fall hazards, electrical hazards, machine guarding, respiratory hazards, chemical exposures) and methods for controlling or eliminating them.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Windows, Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including typing and keyboard proficiency.
  • Ability to interpret laws, standards, rules, and operating procedures, and apply corrective measures to workplace hazards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to recognize and evaluate occupational safety and health hazards.
  • Experience with investigative procedures, report writing, and documentation of case files.
  • Ability to manage reports to meet deadlines, handle heavy workloads with accuracy, and review employer safety and health management systems.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and recognize hazardous conditions in construction, general, and agricultural industries.
  • Ability to engage tactfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and perspectives.

Qualifications

Selective preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Contributed to workplace safety and health through routine training and education.
  • Assisted with a company or public entity safety and health program as a contributor or safety technician.
  • Participated in a safety and health committee to evaluate culture and conduct root cause analysis of accidents or near-misses.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Employees operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and maintain a current, valid Arizona driver’s license (unexpired, not revoked or suspended).
  • Must complete all required training and pass driver’s license record checks.
  • Employees driving on state business must maintain acceptable driving records and complete required driver training.
  • If using a personally owned vehicle for state business, must maintain statutorily required liability insurance (per Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.11).
  • All newly hired State employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

$56,000.00 annually.

Schedule

Full-time. Work location will be assigned to either Phoenix or Tucson, Arizona, based on departmental needs.
