Responsibilities

  • Leads the day-to-day operations of UNC Health’s Hospital Compliance or Physician Compliance program, ensuring that all activities are aligned with legal requirements, industry standards, and organizational policies.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors compliance initiatives to ensure they meet regulatory standards and mitigate risk.
  • Timely identification, reporting, and resolution of compliance issues across the organization.
  • Promotes adherence to relevant federal and state laws and regulations, as well as UNC Health policies and procedures.
  • Maintains awareness of changes in healthcare regulations and provides updates and guidance to leadership and teammates.
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of policies and procedures that support UNC Health’s compliance with relevant healthcare laws.
  • Conducts regular assessments to identify areas of risk within UNC Health operations.
  • Implements risk mitigation strategies and acts as the key liaison for any compliance audits or investigations.
  • Designs, implements, and manages training programs for UNC Health teammates on compliance and/or ethics topics.
  • Collaborates with the Internal Audit and Legal departments.
  • Collaborates with various departments including Legal, ISD, Risk Management, and others to promote compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and collaborative program management.
  • Leads efforts to continuously improve the compliance program through feedback from audits, assessments, and teammate suggestions.
  • Stays current on best practices and trends within healthcare compliance and applies them to the Compliance Program.

Requirements

  • Education Requirements: Associate’s OR Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline.
  • Licensure/Certification Requirements: Health care compliance certification required within two (2) years of employment (e.g., CHC; CHPC; CPC; etc.).
  • Professional Experience Requirements: If Master’s degree, three (3) years of experience in health care, audit, coding, revenue cycle, legal, privacy, regulatory compliance, and/or other relevant experience. If Bachelor's degree, five (5) years of experience in health care, audit, coding, revenue cycle, legal, privacy, regulatory compliance, and/or other relevant experience. If Associate's degree, seven (7) years of experience in health care, audit, coding, revenue cycle, legal, privacy, regulatory compliance, and/or other relevant experience.
  • Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to lead complex project initiatives, develop and implement program strategies, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Thorough knowledge of health care regulations, principles, concepts and practices; Ability to be flexible in accordance with business needs; Ability to provide strategic advice, develop options, analyze risks, make good judgements, and solve problems; Able to develop highly effective working relationships by building credibility, respect and rapport with internal and external customers; Able to effectively and creatively challenge people, situations and current thinking; Proven ability to secure and analyze a range of quantitative and qualitative information and use this in developing strategies, plans, policies and solutions that meet individual and organizational needs; Computer skills including Outlook, Word, Excel.
