About the role

The purpose of this classification is to conduct inspections of grease traps at food establishments for the Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Program. Appears and testifies at court hearings concerning compliance issues, and assists in establishing the source of illegal, harmful and/or excessive waste discharges into the County’s sewer system and surface waters.

Responsibilities

  • Performs grease trap inspections, sizing, and condition assessments;
  • Oversight of all grease trap installations;
  • Inspection of all food service establishments to ensure compliance with DeKalb County Water and Sewer Ordinances;
  • Opening and noting grease traps, sewer manholes, stormwater manholes, and oil water separators using a variety of tools and equipment;
  • Making appearances and testifying in court regarding water and sewer code compliance violations;
  • Issuing warning notices and court summons for all code and ordinance violations as a sworn officer;
  • Assisting in the writing of Water and Sewer Ordinances;
  • Tracing sources of illegal, harmful, and excessive waste discharges into the County’s wastewater collection system;
  • Updating and maintaining Grease Information Management Database using advanced software;
  • Conducting inspections and surveillance of fat, oil, and grease transporters and providing reports to appropriate authorities;
  • Performing inspections of state-certified waste hauler trucks to ensure proper working order and fitness;
  • Issuing certifications recognized by the state, and completing surveillance of all state certified waste haulers reported or suspected of illegally dumping waste into DeKalb County’s wastewater collection system.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or a closely related field; previous work experience involving water inspection, water construction or water laboratory work preferred;
  • An Associate degree in fields listed; two years experience in industrial or commercial waste inspections, water or wastewater sampling or treatment, or a related field;
  • A valid Georgia driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or a closely related field; previous work experience involving water inspection, water construction or water laboratory work preferred; or an Associate degree in fields listed; two years experience in industrial or commercial waste inspections, water or wastewater sampling or treatment, or a related field;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
