COMMUNITY SUPPORT SPECIALIST

About the role

Direct Support Professionals perform a wide variety of person-centered supports and services with a strong emphasis on personal choice to individuals with developmental disabilities. Responsibilities include backup cook duties and possible driving of a food truck as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Know the service plan and safeguards for each individual served
  • Serve as backup cook as needed
  • Learn the eVero database system for recordkeeping
  • Write daily and monthly notes in a timely manner
  • Assist and inspire individuals to achieve their goals
  • Develop and provide cognitive and physical support to individuals with disabilities
  • Provide safe transportation with a reliable and clean car and driver’s license
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of service plans based on individual preferences, needs, and interests
  • Teach and reinforce techniques to help individuals achieve their goals
  • Help individuals develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships
  • Support the safety of individuals in everyday situations
  • Assist in selection and teaching of appropriate community activities
  • Support participation in community activities
  • Communicate with the individual’s circle of people
  • Attend all required OPWDD and agency trainings
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency
  • Successful completion of the Direct Support Assistant Traineeship
  • Valid NY State Driver License and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Prior experience serving individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities preferred
  • Any offer of employment contingent upon successful completion of a background check
