Community Service Aide

About the Role

Under immediate supervision, in various City agencies, you will receive training and assist in carrying out defined tasks to provide necessary and improved community services.

Responsibilities

• Assist in providing community services by performing liaison functions between the agency and the individuals it serves.
• Serve as an interpreter at service centers for the Department of Social Services.
• Help clients fill out and submit forms.
• Visit elderly persons in their homes or in institutions.
• Visit children who have no relatives and are confined to public or private institutions.
• Receive apprenticeship training in auxiliary work related to various manpower and community development programs.
• Work with community groups in community health programs, such as pest control and elimination of infestation areas.
• Participate in the removal of garbage and trash from vacant lots, backyards, and other areas.
• Improve tenant-management relations for the New York City Housing Authority.
• Contact residents to elicit support and participation in group recreation activities (e.g., sports, games, flower gardening, choral singing, bus outings).
• Assist in directing tenant activities programs at projects.
• Interpret and discuss programs with individual tenants, tenant and community leaders, and groups.
• Set up and coordinate schedules of activities and organize team competitions.
• Distribute informational material to neighborhood residents and business owners for the Housing Authority and Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
• Perform routine office tasks such as filing, record-keeping, and typing.
• Answer telephones, make referrals, or take messages.
• Act as a messenger when required.
• Improve communication between the community and the agency.

Requirements

• The ability to understand and carry out simple instructions.
• In some cases, the ability to speak Spanish may be required.
