About the role

The Fire Inspector Trainee position is an outstanding opportunity to receive the training necessary to become a Community Risk Reduction Inspector with SRVFPD. This comprehensive trainee position is designed to cultivate the next generation of public safety professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections of existing buildings to ensure compliance with laws, ordinances, regulations, standards, applicable codes, and guidelines in accordance with the Fire District’s jurisdictional authority;
  • Prepares necessary correspondence, reports, and records;
  • Conducts surveys of fire hazards and processes complaints;
  • Participates in the delivery and development of public education, public relations, and public information programs;
  • Performs tasks associated with the District’s Exterior Hazard Abatement Program;
  • Develops and delivers public education and public relations programs;
  • Applies laws, ordinances, regulations, standards, and guidelines in accordance with the Fire District’s jurisdictional authority; applies applicable local, state, and federal codes and regulations governing building construction, rehabilitation, alteration, use, and occupancy; provisions of the model Fire and Building Codes, the National Fire Protection Association Standards and related applicable standards;
  • Works such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements;
  • Works as a member of a team in support of the official direction provided, and supports a positive team environment, utilizing constructive interpersonal skills.

Requirements

Age: Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Education: Graduation from High School or G.E.D. is required.
License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License. Maintenance of a valid California driver's license is required as a condition of employment.

Qualifications

  • Accurately interpret and ensure compliance with laws, ordinances, regulations, standards, and guidelines in accordance with the Fire District’s jurisdictional authority;
  • Prepare concise reports with clear and consistent recommendations;
  • Interface effectively with the public; maintain detailed records;
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • Read and interpret building plans and specifications and conduct code research;
  • Successfully understand and conduct mathematics to consistently and accurately calculate building and fire code-related applications and appropriate fees;
  • Disseminate fire and building codes to the public at the public counter and on the telephone;
  • Read a variety of land use, topographic, parcel, and zoning maps;
  • Develop and maintain competencies in technology and equipment approved for use by the District;
  • Work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements;
  • Work as a member of a team in support of the official direction provided, and support a positive team environment, utilizing constructive interpersonal skills.

Benefits

While we can be flexible with scheduling, the ideal candidate will commit at least 24–32 hours per week.

$24.82 - $30.04/hour
