Community Outreach and Health Educator, Bureau of Communicable Diseases

About the role

The Division of Disease Control safeguards the health of New Yorkers through identification, surveillance, treatment, control, and prevention of infectious diseases via seven Bureaus. The Bureau of Communicable Disease (BCD) monitors disease trends, provides medical consultation, and oversees surveillance, prevention, and control of over 70 infectious diseases including foodborne, enteric, waterborne, respiratory (including COVID-19), zoonotic, and vector-borne diseases.

Responsibilities

• Manage health education priorities to plan, coordinate, and monitor community outreach initiatives related to infectious diseases such as COVID-19, flu, RSV, malaria, hepatitis A, legionella and others.
• Organize and facilitate outreach initiatives to address disparities in health access and information, focusing on underserved populations.
• Assist in monitoring and maintaining critical health educational materials, inventory control, and ordering processes for health education materials and incentive items that support outreach and education programs.
• Update and develop outreach and health education materials such as slide decks, training activities, handouts, lesson plans, and resources to support community outreach with a racial equity lens.
• Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal DOHMH colleagues and external partners to align and enhance health education initiatives.
• Track and evaluate outreach and education data to prepare comprehensive reports highlighting the impact of community outreach programs on health equity and infectious disease control.
• Attend and present at meetings with internal and external stakeholders to support Community Engagement and Health Education activities.
• Support seasonal staff and interns during peak outbreak activities.
• Participate in the Incident Command System to support emergency response activities as needed.
• Work on special projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
• High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community-centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
• Education and/or experience equivalent to the above, with at least one year of experience as described in the first bullet.

Preferred Skills

• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage diverse populations in a culturally competent manner.
• Ability to conduct presentations to key stakeholders in community and healthcare settings.
• Community engagement, outreach, and communication experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Interest in participating in conferences, including poster presentations.
