About the role

The City of Claremont seeks a Community Improvement Officer to enforce local regulations, maintain neighborhood quality, and improve the quality of life for residents.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce zoning, property maintenance, and abatement of public nuisances and dangerous buildings, housing codes, and other aspects of the Municipal and Land Use and Development Codes.
  • Interpret and explain laws and regulations to the general public to gain conformance; respond to complaints; conduct daily field inspections; issue notices and orders of compliance; recommend legal prosecution of persons who fail to respond; and coordinate legal action with the City Attorney.
  • Communicate effectively with the public in a friendly, courteous, and firm manner.

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience in code enforcement or two years of progressively responsible experience in a position dealing extensively with the public.
  • High school or GED equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid California State Class C driver's license.
  • PC 832 (citation authority).

Qualifications

  • Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • Experience dealing with the public in challenging situations.
  • Knowledge of municipal government, code enforcement practices, and investigative procedures.

Schedule

Full-time, 38-hour work week. Work hours will be Wednesday through Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. During the training period, workdays will be Monday through Thursday. Some early mornings, late evenings, or special events may be required, based on the needs of the Department.
