Community Health Worker

Join the ENRxICH research study in the School of Pharmacy at UW-Madison as a Community Health Worker. Work alongside Dr. Maurer, the study coordinator for Dr. Shiyanbola (based at University of Michigan), whose studies seek to examine how psychosocial and sociocultural factors influence medication-taking behaviors. This participant study develops and implements patient-centered interventions through the work of Community Health Workers, partnering with peer support persons to improve medication use and diabetes management.

About the role

This role will collaborate with community partners and organizations to deliver a component of the study intervention for the ongoing ENRxICH research project. This is a 20-25% FTE position (averaging 8-10 hours per week) and may require occasional evening and weekend hours for research responsibilities. Travel to/within Madison, WI is required. You must qualify to use a UW-Madison fleet vehicle by possessing a valid driver's license and meeting risk management standards or have the ability to provide your own transportation that meets UW-Madison risk management standards.

The hired candidate will be required to complete all required training including human subjects research, HIPAA, and intervention delivery trainings.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the recruitment and screening of subjects for clinical studies by conducting physical health assessments
• Collects, verifies, and enters data into database and analyzes clinical information data
• Serves as a primary point of contact for emergent study participant situations related to adverse effects or complications of the study
• Provides appropriate treatment plan direction and information to study participants
• May provide expertise, training, and guidance to the community, peers, and/or students
• Supervises the day-to-day activities of research work unit
• Secures and schedules logistics for clinical research projects according to the research plan
• Serves as main point of contact and liaison to project participants, investigators, research sponsors, and the research team delivering study information in accordance with established research project standards and protocols
• Participates in research team meetings including periodic meetings with Milwaukee AHEC supervisors

Requirements

• Completion of the Milwaukee Area Health Education Center’s Community Health Worker training program or a comparable program
• Experience with diabetes via a lived experience
• At least two years’ experience working with underserved individuals through community engagement or partnership
• Excellent verbal or written skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word & Excel
• Must be able to work well independently as well as on a team
• Detail-oriented, with excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing electronic documentation of case management information
• Bilingual in English and Spanish

Education

Bachelor's degree preferred.

Department

Hosted in the Clinical Practice, Innovation, and Research Division in the School of Pharmacy at UW-Madison, this position will be part of a team of Community Health Workers as well as Dr. Maurer, the study coordinator, and Principal Investigators, Dr. Chui (based at University of Wisconsin) and Dr. Shiyanbola (based at University of Michigan). Additional research team members are based in Milwaukee.

Pay

$25.73 per hour
