About the role

Provides outreach and education to Chittenden County residents, institutions, businesses, landlords/property management, towns, and event planners to decrease waste generation and increase diversion of material from disposal. Responsible for planning, developing, implementing, evaluating, promoting, and maintaining waste reduction programs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with local, state, and regional officials, other solid waste districts, solid waste haulers, businesses, institutions, and organizations.
  • Develop and present education programs to event organizers, venue owners, landlords, residents, non-profits, and business owners, including tours of CSWD facilities.
  • Inform and educate businesses, institutions, and the general public to influence behavior.
  • Work independently and be self-managing.
  • Assist other Outreach staff with classes, events, and tours as needed.
  • Provide information to businesses, institutions, landlords, event planners, event vendors, and residents on solid waste management options via facility tours, presentations, workshops, phone, email, mail, social media, and other platforms.
  • Plan, implement, promote, and evaluate residential and community waste reduction programs; assist with planning, implementation, and promotion of other waste reduction programs.
  • Educate residents, landlords, event organizers, municipalities, and community groups on CSWD Ordinance and solid waste-related state law requirements.
  • Oversee the Waste Warrior volunteer program, including recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision to support event waste management.
  • Partner with community organizations to execute waste reduction projects.
  • Identify residential facilities, complexes, and public venues not meeting recycling, organics management, or other diversion requirements; provide assistance through workshops, presentations, waste assessments, technical support, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Monitor exterior recycling and food scrap collection infrastructure to ensure compliance with CSWD requirements.
  • Educate event planners, venue owners, and event vendors on CSWD Ordinance and solid waste-related state law requirements; assist with CSWD booths at special events.
  • Fulfill requirements of CSWD’s Solid Waste Implementation Plan.
  • Work with Compliance Department staff to assess, initiate, and track enforcement investigations and actions involving residents, multi-residential housing facilities, and institutions in violation of the Solid Waste Management Ordinance.
  • Collaborate with Business Outreach Coordinator, School Outreach Coordinator, and Compliance to coordinate and deliver District outreach initiatives; represent CSWD on local and state committees.
  • Prepare reports and other documents; appear before the Board of Commissioners and committees as required.
  • Assist with implementation, tracking, and reporting of grant-funded outreach projects and initiatives.
  • Research and develop waste reduction strategies.
  • Maintain data on outreach programs and events; generate reports as needed.
  • Answer phones at least four hours per week, or more when coverage is needed.
  • Write blog posts to showcase community waste reduction successes.
  • Adhere to District safety programs and policies.
  • Perform all other related work as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to resolve complaints using diplomacy, discretion, persuasiveness, and resourcefulness while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • High level of oral and written communication skills; aptitude for presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Experience developing and delivering educational programming, training, or public presentations.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software; social media experience is a plus.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Knowledge of solid waste issues and industry; familiarity with local, regional, and state regulations pertaining to solid and hazardous waste.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical information clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Adhere to District personnel policies.
