About Kontinentalist

Kontinentalist is a data storytelling studio and web publication committed to growing Asia’s voice in global conversations. Our award-winning digital stories blend data visualisation, narrative, design, and code, helping our clients and non-profit partners communicate data in engaging and memorable ways. Passionate about empowering Asia’s data storytellers and helping them find belonging with one another, we create educational content (workshops, talks, social media) as well as opportunities and supportive communities for data storytelling professionals and enthusiasts in the region.

Responsibilities

  • Editorial standards and review
    • Check stories before publication as an outside eye identifying factual vulnerabilities, sourcing gaps, and methodological weaknesses
    • Hold sensitivity and ethics review as a standing part of the editorial process where applicable
    • Develop and maintain editorial standards frameworks together with the Editorial Lead that the editorial team and freelance contributors can use to self-assess and improve their own work
    • Identify and coordinate with external experts, researchers, and specialists to stress-test claims and bring in relevant domain knowledge at the right point in the process
  • Membership and partnerships
    • Edit and produce Kawan member-facing content, including articles, behind-the-scenes pieces, and updates that communicate Kontinentalist's work and process to our membership community
    • Ensure that what we publish for and to our community reflects the same standards we hold for our main editorial work
    • Set strategy for partnerships and develop a plan with the Community Manager with researchers, institutions, and organisations whose work folds into and strengthens our editorial and community output
  • Knowledge and methodology communication
    • Set the strategy for how Kontinentalist communicates its editorial standards, methodology, and data practices externally through a public methodology platform, explainers, or other accessible formats
    • Ensure our methodology and standards documentation is built, maintained, and genuinely usable by the communities and collaborators we work with

Requirements

  • Demonstrable writing and editing ability. This will be tested in a work assessment as well.
  • Comfort working with evidence and reasoning, critically examining pieces to understand where they might be potential pitfalls or logic gaps.
  • Some experience in managing others, or a small team.
  • Relevant experience in community management, audience engagement, and translating copy for social media communications.
  • A good understanding of current affairs in the Asian region, particularly around tech, climate, social justice, and infrastructure.
  • Sound independent judgment. You know when to act on your own and when to bring something to the Editorial Lead.
  • Comfort working with significant autonomy and taking on a management role with freelance contributors, including holding them to deadlines and editorial standards.
  • Strong initiative and the discipline to set and meet your own deadlines while learning new parts of the role on the fly.
  • Experience collaborating with internal and external writers to understand what they're going for and help them get there, rather than just correcting copy.
  • Familiarity with working in highly collaborative, cross-disciplinary environments, alongside designers, developers, and researchers, not just other editors.
  • Openness to giving and receiving direct criticism, and genuine curiosity about doing this work better over time.
  • Knowledge of or interest in decolonial and feminist methodologies and how they apply to data storytelling — not required, but a strong plus.
