AIA Minnesota, founded in 1892, is the professional association for architects in the state. We bring value to over 2,300 members through connection, advocacy, and promoting the value of architects and architecture. Our work includes a major regional conference, public outreach programs, digital and print publications, legislative advocacy, and continuing education.

About the role

The Communications & Public Outreach Manager delivers high-quality communications and outreach events to members and the public, supports key committees, and assists with daily operations of AIA Minnesota, three local chapters, and the Minnesota Architectural Foundation (MAF). This role reports to the EVP/Executive Director and collaborates with staff and volunteer leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Communications
    • Write copy for member and public communications via email, newsletters, and promotional materials.
    • Manage, develop, post, and monitor social media for AIA Minnesota, local chapters, and MAF.
    • Create and implement social media calendars; track posts and followers.
    • Design graphics and prepare photos using Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
    • Edit and proof digital and print publications.
    • Collaborate with staff and volunteer leaders on communications and sponsor outreach.
  • Residential Programming
    • Assist in staffing residential architecture committee meetings.
    • Maintain committee and event content on the AIA Minnesota website.
    • Support event logistics, marketing, and communications.
    • Manage email and mailing lists; publicize awards programs and recipients.
    • Oversee the Homes by Architects Tour (HBAT), including timeline management, volunteer recruitment, and social media content.
    • Write copy for guidebooks, set up virtual tours, arrange signage, and prepare supplies for tour homes.
    • Staff the tour weekend (typically the third weekend in September).
  • Lake Superior Design Retreat (LSDR)
    • Support the LSDR Committee in planning and implementing this annual multi-day event in Duluth, MN.
    • Gather speaker bios and photos; update the website.
    • Coordinate sponsor outreach and ensure benefits are fulfilled.
    • Design and update signage and event materials.
    • Gather and pack supplies; create and summarize event evaluations.
    • Take and edit photos; create slide decks.
  • Local Chapter and Committee Support
    • Staff board meetings and retreats.
    • Set up registrations and publicize chapter events via email and social media.
    • Coordinate continuing education credit submissions for events.
    • Support golf outings and other events (e.g., on-site registration, photography).
    • Update webpages as needed.
  • General Office and Team Support
    • Update homepage and other website pages.
    • Review, format, and publish job board and events calendar submissions.
    • Answer general office phone calls and voicemails.
    • Coordinate catering and logistics for events.
    • Assist with event registration and check-in.

Requirements

  • Degree from a four-year college/university in communications, nonprofit management, architecture, or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of related work experience.
  • Proven history of reliability, responsiveness, and exceptional service to members and the public.
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel and PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Strong graphic design experience and expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to work inclusively with diverse teams and individuals.
  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and resilient in handling challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience with a professional association, nonprofit, architecture firm, or school of architecture.
  • Knowledge of architecture or experience in volunteer/event management.
  • Experience with WordPress and Squarespace website management tools.

Pay

$59,000-$63,000 annually.
