About the role

BC Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) is a non-partisan national leader with a mission to promote, defend, sustain, and extend civil liberties and human rights. This full-time, permanent position supports the communications and engagement efforts of the Association.

The Communications, Outreach and Events Coordinator oversees the organization’s social media presence, with a focus on video content production; plans and carries out public events, including the Annual Youth Conference; and supports outreach efforts to boost engagement in BCCLA’s work.

This position works partially remotely and partially in-person from our office in Vancouver at #306-268 Keefer St, on unceded Indigenous lands belonging to the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlil̓wətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil Waututh) nations. Remote access to all required platforms will be provided.

Responsibilities

Communications

  • Oversee BCCLA’s social media presence, including content creation, scheduling, and monitoring, with a focus on video content (ideation, planning, scripting, recording, and editing).
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on social media performance, using insights to improve reach and impact.
  • Design visual assets for social media, email marketing, and small publications (e.g., know-your-rights factsheets).
  • Generate ideas for, source, order, and manage inventory of BCCLA-branded materials.
  • Create and update content for the WordPress website and support ongoing maintenance.
  • Assist with media relations, including uploading and sending pre-prepared media releases, monitoring coverage, and triaging inquiries.
  • Support digital action campaigns (e.g., petitions) with copywriting, tool creation, and campaign visuals.
  • Contribute to copywriting, editing, and proofreading for newsletters, press releases, announcements, and the annual report.
  • Collaborate on the production of publications, including the annual report and public legal education materials.

Outreach & Events Coordination

  • Plan and execute the Association’s Annual Youth Conference(s) and other youth-focused programming.
  • Collaborate with the Engagement team to plan public legal education, campaign, and outreach events, including the Annual General Meeting.
  • Proactively identify and attend community outreach and tabling events, maintaining a community events calendar.
  • Coordinate event logistics for community events and outreach.
  • Support the production of press conferences, report launches, and other events.
  • Assist with campaign lunch events and fundraising/stewardship events.
  • Maintain inventory and coordinate distribution of BCCLA publications.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of BCCLA’s community outreach strategy.
  • Triage general contact and supporter-focused inboxes, including social media messages, and respond to outreach-related inquiries.
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Combination of education and/or work experience in communications, event management, campaigning, and/or community engagement.
  • Strong ability to record, edit, and produce video content for social media; comfort on camera or supporting others on camera is an asset.
  • High-level experience with social media platforms, content planning tools, WordPress, and other digital communications tools.
  • Experience designing digital materials (print materials an asset).
  • Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite is a strong asset.
  • Ability to design visual assets aligned with organizational brand and campaign tone.
  • Experience with event planning, promotion, sponsorship, and logistics coordination.
  • Excellent time management, project coordination, and organizational skills.
  • Well-developed relationship-building and interpersonal skills, including public speaking and working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience managing external relationships with stakeholders and community members is an asset.
  • Experience collaborating with contractors is an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including writing substantive content and logistical instructions.
  • Ability to communicate empathetically and foster an inclusive environment in physical and digital spaces.
  • Proactive approach to addressing accessibility needs in events and outreach.
  • Experience translating legal or specialized content into plain language is an asset; editing and proofreading skills are an asset.
  • Comfort working occasional evenings and weekends, in compliance with BCCLA’s Collective Agreement.
  • Knowledge of and interest in human rights and civil liberties issues, strong ethics, and a deep commitment to equality, justice, and freedom.
  • Passion for civil liberties and human rights, or lived experience working on related issues (paid or volunteer), are strong assets.
  • Ability in languages other than English is an asset.
