  • Advocating for the Fashion Workers Act in 2024, which regulates model management companies and provides labor protections for models in New York's fashion industry.

About the Role

The Communications and Organizing Associate will play a crucial role in labor rights and mobilizing support for workers and survivors of abuse. This position involves strategic digital messaging, media relations, and campaign organizing.

Responsibilities

  • Content Creation: Draft press releases, email blasts, newsletters, and digital toolkits; develop regular worker-facing content; prepare draft interview talking points, press statements, and maintain a press contact list.
  • Digital Strategy: Develop and implement strategies to expand worker reach, communications, and organizing via digital channels; manage organizational social media channels; update the website; create engaging graphics/videos; and track audience analytics.
  • Media Relations: Assist in cultivating relationships with journalists; pitch stories about worker struggles or victories; monitor news cycles for rapid response opportunities.
  • Organizing & Outreach: Coordinate press conferences, know-your-rights, and coalition-building events; gather multimedia for campaigns; manage and track social media/digital engagement; and implement a strategic communications and engagement plan as part of enforcement strategies for relevant laws, including the Fashion Workers Act.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of experience in labor organizing, nonprofit communications, digital strategy, or advocacy journalism.
  • Familiarity with the fashion industry and grassroots community organizations.
  • Sharp written and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail, and dedication to social and economic justice.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and tools like Mac, Canva, Zoom, Whatsapp, Signal, Gmail, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn.
  • High level of organization and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent time-management skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and engage in strictly confidential conversations.
  • Independent thinking and quick learning ability.
  • Willingness to work remotely and meet in person when needed.

Salary & Benefits

The expected base salary range for this role is $65,000 to $74,000 per year, depending on experience. Benefits include a retirement savings plan with a dollar-for-dollar employer match of up to 3%, comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, and flexibility to work from home.
