Job Description
The Communications Operator at UofL Health is responsible for providing a welcoming and supportive environment for patients, families, physicians, visitors, and co-workers. Key duties include monitoring hospital communications systems, handling emergency alerts, paging physicians and staff, maintaining on-call schedules, and coordinating with various departments.
- Maintains hospital communications systems
- Monitors various codes and alarms
- Communicates with internal and external customers
- Pages physicians and staff
- Coordinates and implements pager management
- Maintains and updates on-call schedules
- Completes routine clerical duties
- Ensures compliance with company policies and standards
- Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements
- Performs other duties as assigned
Essential Functions
- Maintains hospital communications systems (e.g., Simplex Fire Alarm)
- Monitors various codes and alarms
- Follows existing communications processes and procedures
- Communicates with internal and external customers
- Coordinates and implements pager management
- Maintains and updates on-call schedules
- Completes routine clerical duties
- Ensures compliance with company policies and standards
- Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements
- Performs other duties as assigned

- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Service excellence, flexibility, interpersonal skills, knowledge of multiline phone system, ACD and equipment, TDD phone operation, AT&T language line, SMS, patient information, screen codes, computer skills, Microsoft Word and Excel, learning new systems and databases
- Reasoning Ability: Complex situation thinking, solution determination, implementation
- Computer Skills: Excellent computer skills, familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
Job Requirements
- Education: High School diploma or GED
- Experience: One (1) year of experience in a communications/operator role, or three to five (3-5) years of experience in a communications/operator role (preferred)
