Job Description

The Communications Operator at UofL Health is responsible for providing a welcoming and supportive environment for patients, families, physicians, visitors, and co-workers. Key duties include monitoring hospital communications systems, handling emergency alerts, paging physicians and staff, maintaining on-call schedules, and coordinating with various departments.

  • Maintains hospital communications systems
  • Monitors various codes and alarms
  • Communicates with internal and external customers
  • Pages physicians and staff
  • Coordinates and implements pager management
  • Maintains and updates on-call schedules
  • Completes routine clerical duties
  • Ensures compliance with company policies and standards
  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Essential Functions

  • Maintains hospital communications systems (e.g., Simplex Fire Alarm)
  • Monitors various codes and alarms
  • Follows existing communications processes and procedures
  • Communicates with internal and external customers
  • Coordinates and implements pager management
  • Maintains and updates on-call schedules
  • Completes routine clerical duties
  • Ensures compliance with company policies and standards
  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Additional Job Description

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Service excellence, flexibility, interpersonal skills, knowledge of multiline phone system, ACD and equipment, TDD phone operation, AT&T language line, SMS, patient information, screen codes, computer skills, Microsoft Word and Excel, learning new systems and databases
  • Reasoning Ability: Complex situation thinking, solution determination, implementation
  • Computer Skills: Excellent computer skills, familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel

Job Requirements

  • Education: High School diploma or GED
  • Experience: One (1) year of experience in a communications/operator role, or three to five (3-5) years of experience in a communications/operator role (preferred)
