About the Role

The Harris County Attorney's Office (HCAO) is hiring a Communications Coordinator to support the work of the Communications and Outreach Division. The Harris County Attorney is the chief civil legal officer for Harris County, representing the county, its officials, and employees in legal matters and serving the public through impactful litigation and enforcement actions. The Communications Coordinator will assist in creating and maintaining a wide range of communications materials to support internal and external engagement, with a focus on newsletters, website content, and print materials. This position reports to the Communications Manager and plays a key role in advancing HCAO’s mission through strategic communications support. The Coordinator may also oversee interns.

Responsibilities

  • Write, design the content flow for, and distribute the office's internal and external newsletters on a regular schedule.
  • Draft and edit communications materials including brochures, handouts, one-pagers, and other print materials.
  • Update and maintain copy on the HCAO website in coordination with subject matter experts; serve as the Communications team's lead liaison with IT for website updates (no web design or development experience required).
  • Support internal communications, including maintaining the HCAO intranet site and drafting internal emails.
  • Draft social media copy to support the Multimedia team's content calendar.
  • Support the creation of other materials as needed, including presentations and internal documents.
  • Maintain editorial calendars and help track deliverables, deadlines, and creative assets for ongoing campaigns.
  • Assist with light project management duties, ensuring timely completion of content and collateral with proper branding.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of two (2) to four (4) years of experience in communications, public affairs, marketing, or a similar role.
  • Minimum of two (2) to four (4) years of experience with communications strategy, writing, public relations, or similar experience (may include job experience, internships, fellowships, and other related experience).
  • An Associate Degree may be substituted for additional experience.

Skills

  • Ability to attend events outside of typical working hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to tailor content for different audiences and formats.
  • Basic knowledge of communications strategy and messaging principles.
  • Comfort learning and working within a content management system for website updates.
  • Familiarity with email newsletter platforms and social media platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X).
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Comfortable collaborating in a team environment and working independently when necessary.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Preferences

  • Interest in public service, law, or local government.
  • Experience maintaining or updating website content, including through a content management system.
  • Familiarity with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Express) is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and audiences.

About the Harris County Attorney’s Office

Located in downtown Houston, HCAO serves as the chief civil law office for Harris County, Texas’s largest county. The office represents Harris County government, the Harris County Flood Control District, the Harris County Toll Road Authority, and multiple emergency network agencies in civil legal matters. It also provides legal advice and counsel to County elected officials, appointed officials, departments, and employees. With more than 300 attorneys and staff, the office handles a broad range of public law, including general counsel services, defensive litigation, affirmative and special litigation, employment, environmental enforcement, real estate, property tax, compliance and revenue, child protective services, disability and elder law, hospital district representation, communications and outreach, and the Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library.

About County Attorney Abbie Kamin

Harris County Commissioners Court appointed Abbie Kamin to serve as County Attorney, taking office on June 15, 2026. A native Houstonian, attorney, and public servant, Kamin previously represented District C on Houston City Council. She practiced law with a focus on general civil litigation and civil rights litigation, including voting rights and Title IX matters. She also served as Associate Regional Director for the Anti-Defamation League’s Southwest Region and worked in the Texas Legislature. Kamin earned her J.D., cum laude, from American University Washington College of Law and her B.A., cum laude, from Tulane University. She leads the office with a focus on effective legal representation, sound public administration, professionalism, and service to Harris County residents.

Schedule

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, however work hours may vary depending on departmental needs.

Work Environment

This job typically operates in a professional office environment. The employee uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, scanners/copiers, and phones. The role is largely sedentary, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.
