New Millennium Academy (NMA) is a public charter school dedicated to preparing learners for life through high academic achievement and cultural pride. Founded in 2005 to serve the Hmong population in the Twin Cities, NMA now serves approximately 800 students in grades K-8. Located in a brand-new building in Brooklyn Center, NMA offers a standards-based education with technology integration and support for English Language Learners (ELLs).

About the Role

The Communications Coordinator manages the school’s annual yearbook, serves as the school photographer and videographer, and oversees social media accounts, website content, and marketing collateral. This role requires alignment with NMA’s core principles and an understanding of the unique challenges faced by immigrant and refugee communities. The ideal candidate will thrive in a high-performing, fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Execute NMA’s communications strategy in partnership with the Development and Compliance Manager.
  • Manage graphic design, photography, print layout, video editing, and other multimedia needs.
  • Oversee the creation of the yearbook, including planning, photo collection, layout, design, and student engagement (may include facilitating a yearbook club).
  • Coordinate picture days and make-up sessions, updating photos in Infinite Campus.
  • Photograph all school events and organize photo archives.
  • Archive NMA brochures, communication materials, business cards, banners, and other collateral.
  • Maintain NMA’s website and intranet.
  • Create promotional, marketing, and informational materials for social media, the website, and community distribution.
  • Manage NMA’s social media accounts and engage with media as needed.
  • Maintain CAIR-Chicago branding protocol and aesthetic.
  • Research and implement new technologies to enhance communications.
  • Promote NMA’s work at events, speaking engagements, and media interviews while ensuring all communications align with NMA’s core values and mission.
  • Assist with school-wide projects, library support, and student recruitment/enrollment efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Graphic Design, Marketing, or a related field (preferred).
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, etc.).
  • Basic photography, filmmaking, and video editing skills.
  • Experience with advanced camera and microphone equipment (a plus).
  • Willingness to learn HTML, CSS, and content-management systems.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work quickly and independently.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to engage with diverse age groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in a high-performing, fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to professional growth and development.
  • Ability to serve as a role model for effective citizenship and professionalism.

  • Superior analytical skills and creativity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual fluency in Hmong.
  • Experience working with elementary and middle school students.

40 hours per week, 12-month contract.
