About the role

The Commodities Supervisor plays a crucial role in supporting our purpose of creating lasting value for those we serve by providing leadership to distribution center team members and overseeing all department operations. This position provides day-to-day direction, as well as guidance on projects led by team members. The Commodities Supervisor is responsible for the department’s operations budget and ensures all capital projects are completed on time and within budget. This individual helps develop best practices by aligning department processes between all company locations. They implement improvement opportunities to manage workflow, promote safety, provide training, and ensure compliance in the distribution center while supporting a positive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Drive company safety initiatives and ensure compliance
  • Provide supervision, leadership, coaching, and mentoring to team members
  • Analyze daily reports, metrics, and spreadsheets to identify areas of opportunity
  • Ensure the accuracy of customer orders and product returns
  • Oversee picking, transfer queue, and error reporting
  • Encourage creativity, risk-taking, and constant improvements
  • Keep team members focused and on track
  • Escalate issues which cannot be resolved by the team
  • Assist in managing the delivery logistics for the branch
  • Assist Production Manager to improve scrap percent of sales of copper
  • Maximize machine uptime
  • Provide backup support to team members as needed
  • Work side-by-side with inside sales, counter, Production Manager, and distribution center manager to ensure quality customer service
  • Train new team members
  • Oversee daily production schedule and smooth production levels accordingly
  • Drive for continuous improvement
  • Promote company culture and the 5 P’s

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; minimum of a two-year degree preferred
  • Previous distribution center experience preferred
  • Previous experience in distribution center leadership preferred
  • Previous experience managing a team of five or more preferred
  • Electrical product knowledge is preferred
  • Ability to lift 70 lbs required; lift 100 lbs at times
  • Ability to use forklift equipment required
  • Demonstrated computer skills
  • Ability to work with Excel documents
  • Knowledge of Eclipse and RF Scan is preferred
  • Able to work a varied shift

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Consistently: standing, walking, lifting, working with others, working indoors
  • Frequently: carrying, pushing, bending at the waist, twisting upper body, reaching, working with hands & fingers, vision acuity near & far, depth perception, field of vision, color vision, team lifting, customer contact, extended day, cold, heat, temperature changes, and high places
  • Sometimes: sitting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, talking, hearing, non-standard work shift, wet, humid, noise, working outdoors, and mechanical hazards
  • Occasionally: crawling, driving, vibration, confined area, fumes, odors, dusts, and mists

Pay

Several factors are considered in making compensation decisions at Van Meter, including but not limited to education, skill sets, work experience and training, and other business and organizational needs. Please note that compensation may be below the lower end of the range when the minimum requirements of the role are not met, and the higher end is reserved for candidates with extensive experience and qualifications that exceed the requirements of the role.
