Summary

The Commercial Manager position represents Sims in the acquisition of scrap metal, including pricing of material, coordinating transportation, sourcing of scrap material, communicating with vendors, maintaining business relationships, negotiating payment terms, negotiating specification of materials, visiting suppliers, and coordinating with appropriate parties. Assist in special projects as required.

Pricing and Acquisition of Scrap Material

  • Source scrap metal materials, negotiate the specification of materials, and negotiate payment terms.
  • Meet or exceed volume and margin goals as provided.
  • Aid Commercial Managers in meeting supplier needs at the facility, including quality inspections and payments.
  • Interact with operational personnel concerning the grading and quality of scrap delivered to the plant.
  • Exercise independent judgment in approving downgrades of materials in the yard.
  • Maintain full knowledge of processes and systems necessary to operate both ferrous and non-ferrous scales when needed.

  • Maintain the content of facility scoreboards for customer content.

Developing New and Maintaining Sources of Scrap Metal

  • Cold call potential new suppliers and build a database to track the success of calls. The goal is to set up appointments and establish new accounts.
  • Establish new account relationships with potential suppliers, including visiting supplier locations to examine materials, quote prices, and coordinating with the transportation department to establish rates and pick-up schedules. Buyers will generally transition larger long-term accounts to a Commercial Manager once the relationships are established.

  • Manage resolution of customer complaints and concerns.
  • Maintain NMVTIS records to verify that customers are properly reporting the detailing of cars.

Maintain Business Relationships with Suppliers, Customers, and Vendors

  • Oversee customer relations and retention at the facility, including greeting customers, analyzing scrap materials for purchase, and authorizing overrides when appropriate.
  • The Commercial Manager may or may not be the direct supervisor of one or more of these individuals, but regardless of the reporting relationship, the Buyer will be responsible for intervening as necessary to ensure that suppliers experience an appropriate “customer experience” at Sims Metal.

Understand Industry Trends

  • Stay current with industry trends.
  • Understand how regional markets affect global markets.
  • Stay current on federal, state, and local regulations regarding scrap metal recycling (e.g., scrap theft, motor vehicle laws, etc.) and coordinate the implementation of these regulations at the facility.
  • Gather appropriate information about the local market for raw materials, particularly about pricing trends, local projects, and other potential supply availability.

Qualifications/Education Requirements

  • College degree in business or marketing, desirable or equivalent business experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in generating new business as a scrap metal buyer or sales role within the industrial sector.

  • Proficiency with MS Office.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong cold-calling and follow-up skills.
  • Excellent negotiating skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Positive credit history.
