About the role

RiverBank is a community bank dedicated to supporting the growth and success of businesses in Spokane, WA. We are expanding in 2026 and are seeking a Commercial Loan Underwriter to join our high-performing team.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new, renewed, and modified commercial credit relationships ranging from small business credits to complex middle-market lending opportunities.

  • Analyze business and personal financial statements, tax returns, borrowing base reports, cash flow trends, collateral, industry conditions, and global debt service capacity.

  • Assess borrower creditworthiness, repayment sources, collateral adequacy, guarantor strength, leverage, liquidity, and industry-specific risks.

  • Evaluate and structure credit facilities including working capital lines of credit, equipment financing, commercial term loans, business acquisition financing, and commercial real estate loans.

  • Recommend loan structure, pricing, covenants, collateral requirements, guarantor support, approval conditions, and other terms consistent with client needs and RiverBank risk tolerance.

  • Identify policy exceptions, documentation deficiencies, compliance concerns, and appropriate mitigating factors.

  • Prepare clear, concise, accurate, and well-supported credit presentations, recommendations, and loan approval packages.

  • Monitor borrower financial performance, covenant compliance, approval conditions, and overall credit quality.

  • Determine appropriate risk ratings and identify emerging risks within credit relationships.

  • Support annual reviews, credit renewals, portfolio monitoring, and ongoing risk assessment activities.

  • Identify signs of portfolio deterioration and recommend corrective actions when appropriate.

  • Maintain strong knowledge of economic, industry, and market trends affecting commercial borrowers.

  • Collaborate with Commercial Bankers, Relationship Managers, Associate Relationship Managers, Credit Administration, and other team members throughout the credit lifecycle.

  • May assist production staff with deal structuring and provide guidance during pre-flight reviews of complex transactions.

  • Review and clarify financial information necessary for underwriting and portfolio management.

  • May participate in customer and prospect conference calls as appropriate to support credit analysis, relationship development, and borrower discussions.

  • Serve as a resource for underwriting standards to all staff.

  • Contribute to ongoing credit training, underwriting consistency, and best practices.

  • Ensure all recommendations comply with RiverBank Loan Policy, regulatory requirements, credit standards, and safe-and-sound banking practices.

  • Maintain thorough and complete documentation supporting underwriting conclusions.

  • Support loan review, audits, examinations, internal reviews, and special credit projects as needed.

  • Complete required training and remain current on regulatory, economic, and industry developments.

  • Support consistent portfolio governance and credit quality initiatives.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.

  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant commercial banking experience may be considered.

  • Minimum 3 years of commercial credit underwriting, credit analysis, or related commercial banking experience.

  • Demonstrated experience underwriting C&I credit facilities, including operating lines, equipment loans, working capital facilities, commercial term debt, and cash-flow transactions.

  • Experience with commercial real estate, owner-occupied lending, and community banking preferred.

  • Prior experience with SBA underwriting and Loan Programs preferred.

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting principles, commercial financial statement analysis, cash flow modeling, and global debt service analysis.

  • Strong understanding of commercial lending fundamentals, including operating cash flow, working capital needs, capital expenditure financing, collateral protection, covenant monitoring, and repayment capacity.

  • Experience spreading business and personal financial statements and tax returns using Buker's Taxanalysis or a comparable financial spreading platform.

  • Knowledge of commercial loan structures, collateral analysis, covenant compliance, guarantor evaluation, and credit risk assessment.

  • Ability to interpret tax returns, borrowing base reports, appraisals, business valuations, legal entity structures, and loan documentation.

  • Working knowledge of banking regulations, credit administration practices, credit policies, and loan documentation requirements.

  • Exceptional analytical, written credit presentation, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment while balancing client service with prudent risk management.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
