Commercial Inspector

About the role

Inspect the structures that power our local economy. Allen County Government is seeking an experienced Commercial Building Inspector to help ensure the safety, compliance, and integrity of commercial construction projects across our community.

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections on commercial construction projects, including new builds, remodels, and renovations
• Ensure compliance with local and state building codes
• Work closely with contractors, architects, and property owners to explain requirements and resolve violations
• Investigate complaints and address structural and safety concerns
• Document inspections, prepare detailed reports, and track compliance
• Perform follow-up inspections to confirm corrective actions
• Interpret and apply building codes across multiple disciplines (structural, electrical, plumbing, etc.)

Requirements

• A High School Diploma or GED
• 8+ years of experience in commercial construction (concrete, roofing, siding, drywall, or related fields)
• Valid Allen County Contractor License, Inspector Certification, or equivalent
• Working knowledge of structural, electrical, plumbing, and safety codes
• Strong communication skills—can work effectively with contractors and design professionals
• Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office and reporting tools)
• Basic math and measurement skills
• Valid Driver’s License

• You can confidently navigate conversations with contractors and design teams
• You bring a practical, solutions-focused approach to code enforcement
• You’re detail-oriented but able to see the big picture
