Commercial Driver II

About the Role
Under general supervision, perform specialized skilled work in the operation of several types of motorized heavy vehicles used in the collection and transfer of refuse, recyclables, debris, construction materials, equipment, compost, and wastewater residuals for the Utilities/Public Works Department. This position is essential; personnel may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed. Applicants must be available to work Sunday through Saturday as needed.
Responsibilities
- Operates one or more types of commercial vehicles requiring a Class A with tanker endorsement Virginia Commercial Driver’s License, in accordance with Spotsylvania County policies, Department of Transportation regulations, and applicable federal, state, or local regulations.
- Performs pre- and post-trip inspections and documents the inspection on forms as directed.
- Performs preventative maintenance and related care of trucks and equipment, making minor repairs as needed.
- Immediately reports all unsafe equipment and situations to supervisors.
- Utilizes commercial vehicles to collect various types of containers, including hook-lift containers and roll-off containers.
- Inspects and reports any collection container in need of repair to supervisors.
- Fuels and cleans trucks and equipment; utilizes steam cleaning and pressure washing equipment.
- Maintains a daily logbook for records of hauling and equipment maintenance on all equipment used in operation.
- Attends and participates in any scheduled training programs or meetings as required.
- Immediately reports any incident, accident, or injury to their supervisor.
- Removes snow from roads and parking lots as directed by the County.
- Responds to emergency calls as required.
- Operates forklifts as needed.
- Operates portable and non-portable pumps for transfer of liquid wastes.
- Hauls wide and oversized loads as needed.
- Transports various equipment, including wood waste grinders, trommel screens, and heavy equipment with lowboy.
- Operates stationary refuse compactors as needed.
- Operates electronic devices, including portable and non-portable radios, cellular devices, tablets, and personal computers.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent, and one (1) to three (3) years of experience in operating Class B and/or Class A commercial vehicles; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
- Possess a valid commercial driver's license, Class A, issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an air-brake endorsement. Tanker endorsement must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
- Successfully complete and pass pre-employment DOT drug screen and DOT physical.
- Obtain a forklift certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Basic computer and technical skills.
- Valid Adult CPR/AED Certification or must obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Valid First Aid Certification or must obtain within 90 days of hire.
Training
- Complete all assigned internal and OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety) trainings as required by the County, including but not limited to:
- OSHA 10 Hour-Construction/Industry
- Control of Hazardous Energy (Lock out/tag out)
- Confined space awareness
- Bloodborne pathogens
- Container loading/unloading
- Stationary compactor operation
- Safe driving
- Equipment-specific competency training
- Heavy Equipment experience is desirable.
Skills
- Knowledge of the operation of motorized equipment and commercial vehicles.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in operating heavy motorized equipment.
- Skill in the use and operation of various heavy trucks.
- Ability to operate trucks safely over assigned routes in accordance with traffic laws and regulations.
- Ability to perform minor maintenance on heavy motorized equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
