Combined Cycle Specialist- I&C Specialist

About the Role

The Combined Cycle Specialist (I&C) reports directly to the Superintendent of Generation and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of plant equipment and systems. This includes monitoring and maintaining conditions that ensure the safe, reliable operation of the plant, compliance with all applicable NERC standards, and adherence to environmental permits. The role also involves following water management guidance, completing individual and teamwork assignments, and ensuring an optimal response to the Energy Control Center’s power needs.

Prior to appointment, individuals must pass and maintain physical requirements to participate on an Emergency Response Team, including a physical exam, pulmonary function test (PFT), and fit tests for personal respiratory protection equipment.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safe work practices and adherence to station safety programs, as well as Corporate, Department, and Bayside Station policies.
• Complete all required training and assessments, including emergency response training (e.g., Confined Space Rescue, Hazmat, Incipient Fire, First Aid/CPR).
• Demonstrate knowledge and skill in all operating positions (Power Block, Steam Plant, Rover, and Control Room), including:
  • Performing accurate rounds and turnovers.
  • Executing HEC procedures, unit/equipment start-ups/shut-downs, and minor repairs.
  • Initiating, working, and completing work orders using the work management system.
• Perform maintenance assignments safely and efficiently, including tasks at a journeyman level within the individual’s “core” craft skill and assisting other specialists as needed.
• Support Continuous Improvement initiatives through Operational Excellence Programs (e.g., ownership of area assignments, 3-way communication, electronic logs, enhanced rounds).
• Foster open communication with peers, support staff, and management while supporting company and station goals.
• Maintain clear communication with Energy Control Center personnel, duty personnel, plant management, engineering, and technical staff regarding equipment problems, system restrictions, delays, and reliability issues.
• Complete logs and reports, including turnover logs, unusual incident reports, accident reports, environmental incident reports, CEM malfunction documentation, and capability reports.
• Respond to emergencies (e.g., personnel injuries, fires, ammonia releases, bomb threats) following documented policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate a complete understanding of HEC (Lockout/Tagout) procedures, confined space requirements, burn permit requirements, and process hazards.
• Maintain “good housekeeping” practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of four (4) years of journeyman-level work experience in a large industrial complex, maintaining and troubleshooting equipment in the Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) area. Experience must include preventative, predictive, and repair maintenance.
• Experience operating industrial equipment such as forklifts, overhead cranes, golf carts, and trucks.
• Equivalent experience may include:
  • 4-year military trade-specific training and apprenticeship.
  • 4-year marine/power engineering degree.
  • Successful completion of an approved 4-year trade apprenticeship program.
• Ability to pass and maintain physical requirements for Emergency Response Team participation, including:
  • Physical exam and pulmonary function test (PFT).
  • Fit tests for personal respiratory protection equipment.
• Ability to work in high-temperature environments, confined spaces, and at heights.
• Ability to hear speech (over radio and face-to-face) and alarms.
• Vision of at least 20/30 in one eye and 20/50 in the other (with or without glasses), including good depth perception, peripheral vision, and color differentiation.
• Ability to climb and descend fixed ladders and up to twenty flights of stairs with sufficient balance and coordination.
• Ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for long periods.
• Physical ability to perform tasks involving bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and carrying up to 20 pounds.
• Ability to wear various respiratory devices (e.g., half-face/full-face air-purifying respirators, SCBA, supplied air respirators) and other personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF), microwaves, and gamma radiation sources may occur.

Qualifications

• Required: Valid High School Diploma or GED.
• Preferred: Two-year technical degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field and/or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
• Utility Power Plant, Process Industry, and/or Petrochemical Plant experience is preferred.

Schedule

Normal work schedule consists of a twelve (12) hour rotating shift, seven days a week. Overtime work may be required to meet business needs.

Storm duty is a condition of employment. Team members are required to participate in response/recovery activities during emergencies/disasters to maintain service for customers. Proper compensation will be provided in accordance with company rules and procedures.
