College Laboratory Technician (Laboratory and Classroom)

General Duties

Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework. Sets up, maintains, and organizes student laboratories. Assists students with setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials. Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards. Maintains required documentation related to laboratory activities. Manages equipment and materials inventories.

About the Role

The Department of Exercise Sciences and Recreation invites applications for a full-time College Laboratory Technician (CLT) position beginning Spring 2027. Candidates must have a strong commitment to exercise physiology with respect to running the Human Performance and Fitness Laboratory. Candidate will be expected to perform the following:

  • Manage and maintain the Human Performance and Fitness laboratory and technology in the classrooms to ensure that the computers are updated with the proper software;
  • Assist with laboratory setting up for courses such as Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, and Motor Learning and briefing students on equipment safety and proper handling;
  • Support adherence to OSHA and university policy, including safe handling of biological samples and hazardous materials;
  • Aid faculty and staff with the use of media and computer programs for instruction and research, while providing ongoing support and professional development to enhance the integration of technology in classroom teaching and human performance and fitness laboratory settings.
  • Manage laboratory supplies, ordering consumables, and coordinating equipment servicing for instructional and research projects in the department;
  • Maintain an inventory of all exercise equipment in the Human Performance and Fitness laboratory, completing equipment logs, supporting lab operations, and potentially supervising research students;
  • Aid with classes that require hands-on labs and practical application components;
  • Aid with the use of lab equipment for research and teaching.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma with a minimum of eight years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an associate's degree may be substituted for two years' experience and a bachelor’s degree may be substituted for four years' experience.
  • This position also requires the ability to direct, train, and supervise others.
  • Must be proficient with the handling and usage of Exercise Science Lab equipment (Technical proficiency with lab equipment (e.g., metabolic carts, EMG, motion capture systems, treadmills, and ergometers) Quantitative and Qualitative data handling skills (e.g., calculations, data cleaning) Familiarity with data analysis and management tools (e.g., Qualtrics, SPSS, motion analysis software) Strong interpersonal skills to support diverse student learning).
