College Laboratory Technician (Laboratory and Classroom)

College Laboratory Technician position in the Department of Exercise Sciences and Recreation, beginning Spring 2027.

About the role

The Department of Exercise Sciences and Recreation is housed in the School of Health Sciences, Human Services and Nursing (HS2N). The school includes six departments and actively engages with community and government partners to support evidence-based practices and health equity, with a special emphasis on urban populations. The faculty are committed to high-quality teaching and preparing ethical, skilled health and human service professionals.

This is a full-time, 35-hour-per-week position with an on-campus presence, which may occasionally require evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain the Human Performance and Fitness laboratory and classroom technology, ensuring computers are updated with proper software.
• Assist with laboratory setup for courses such as Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, and Motor Learning, including briefing students on equipment safety and proper handling.
• Support adherence to OSHA and university policies, including safe handling of biological samples and hazardous materials.
• Assist faculty and staff with media and computer programs for instruction and research, providing ongoing support and professional development for technology integration.
• Manage laboratory supplies, order consumables, and coordinate equipment servicing for instructional and research projects.
• Maintain an inventory of all exercise equipment in the Human Performance and Fitness laboratory, complete equipment logs, support lab operations, and potentially supervise research students.
• Assist with classes requiring hands-on labs and practical application components.
• Assist with the use of lab equipment for research and teaching.

Requirements

• High School Diploma with a minimum of eight years' related experience. Additional education may substitute for experience: an associate's degree for two years or a bachelor’s degree for four years.
• Ability to direct, train, and supervise others.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency with Exercise Science Lab equipment (e.g., metabolic carts, EMG, motion capture systems, treadmills, and ergometers).
• Quantitative and qualitative data handling skills (e.g., calculations, data cleaning).
• Familiarity with data analysis and management tools (e.g., Qualtrics, SPSS, motion analysis software).
• Strong interpersonal skills to support diverse student learning.

Pay

$74,165–76,761. Salaries are commensurate with education and relevant experience and are subject to the Professional Staff Congress-CUNY salary schedule.
