About the role
JerseySTEM is a mission-driven professional network of pro-bono contributors dedicated to improving access to STEM education and career pathways for underserved middle school girls in New Jersey. Members contribute their professional skills and leverage their networks in service of the organization’s gender-equity agenda. This is a pro-bono volunteer position with a minimum six-month commitment of approximately six flexible hours per week. A $100 refundable deposit is required, returned after six months of active membership (K-12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students are exempt).
Responsibilities
- Provide subject matter expertise to the program lead in topics of resume writing, LinkedIn profile development, interview skills, and job search strategies.
- Implement a mentoring program for volunteer program instructors that supports personal and professional development.
- Offer additional professional resources to instructor candidates, including mock interviews for internships, resume reviews, and professional advice for life post-graduation.
- Work with and train recommended mentors to provide mentoring services to participants.
- Routinely communicate with instructors to ensure they are fully engaged in the program.
- Liaise with mentors on a routine basis to ensure satisfactory delivery of services.
- Serve as a Brand Ambassador to expand JerseySTEM’s footprint and build the brand.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for candidates.
- Ensure participants in Federal Work Study are tracking hours appropriately.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of related experience.
- Genuine concern about/interest in solving the STEM education gender gap.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills.
- Resourceful, can-do attitude.
- Experience with universities and college campuses.
- Outreach experience preferred.
- Experience leading a function (e.g., team, department manager) and managing others is desirable.
- Comfort working in a ‘virtual organization’ with digital tools (G-Suite, Slack, Jira, Salesforce).
Preferred Skills
- Proven ability to work effectively in a grassroots project and bring clarity to currently obscure projects.
- Problem-solving and event-planning skills.
- Flexible schedule to allow for daytime calls with school admins during the workweek.
