COLA Special Education Teacher

Location: White Earth – W.E. Circle of Life Academy

About the role

Circle of Life Academy is seeking a Licensed Special Education Teacher to develop and provide specialized instruction that meets the unique needs of students with disabilities. The role includes evaluating and assessing student progress, functioning as an IEP Manager, and identifying and prioritizing areas of the general education curriculum and accommodations for students needing specialized instruction. The teacher will integrate Ojibwe language and culture into teaching units and lessons.

Responsibilities

• Teach and case manage Special Education students.
• Create and maintain a classroom atmosphere that facilitates learning and ensures high academic achievement.
• Carry out a program of study prescribed in classroom/grade lesson plans.
• Evaluate each student’s learning style and adapt the learning environment accordingly.
• Maintain high levels of classroom discipline in accordance with school rules.
• Develop and implement high-quality lesson plans.
• Collect, analyze, evaluate, and use student data to improve teaching strategies.
• File routine reports such as attendance, discipline, and parent contacts.
• Maintain high academic standards and clear performance goals for all students.
• Manage Special Education paperwork and adhere to Due Process timelines.
• Integrate Ojibwe language and culture into teaching units and lessons.
• Ensure confidentiality of student, staff, and school data in compliance with Federal, State, and Tribal regulations.
• Comply with mandated reporting standards for child abuse or neglect.
• Adhere to BIE reporting requirements to maintain a minimum attendance rate of 95% or better.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in the subject area or level the candidate is hired to teach.
• Current Minnesota State K-12 Special Education Teaching License in Developmental Cognitive Disabilities (DCD) or Academic Behavioral Strategist (ABS).
• Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) license is a bonus.
• Valid Minnesota Driver’s License and insurance.
• Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.

Skills

• Knowledge of White Earth Tribal Council and Circle of Life Academy policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of White Earth Reservation history, culture, and lifestyles.
• Understanding of curriculum design, teaching methods, and measurement of teaching effects.
• Knowledge of human behavior, learning styles, and motivation.
• Proficiency in using technology for data collection, reports, and student learning.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for engaging with students, staff, parents, and the community.
• Ability to collect, organize, and evaluate student data.
• Ability to apply creative teaching methods.
