About the role
Responsible for capturing data from medical records for the purpose of reimbursement, statistics, research/studies, resource allocation and benchmarking. Works daily with the CDI Auditors, provides education, and is part of the Clinical Documentation Improvement process.
Responsibilities
- Assigns ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes to inpatient and/or outpatient accounts; applies CPT codes to outpatient accounts.
- Determines appropriate sequencing of codes based on coding guidelines.
- Identifies insufficient or incomplete documentation within the medical record and solicits response from physicians via queries or flagging deficiencies.
- Works closely with CDI auditors to obtain clinical documentation supporting appropriate reimbursement and increasing severity of illness.
- Collaborates on education for the team and providers.
- Communicates with the business office and monitors edits to resolve coding issues related to billing in a timely manner.
- Serves as a coding resource to other hospital personnel.
- Takes an active role in self-development.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as needed.
Requirements
- Associate degree in healthcare or Health Information Technology.
- Graduate from a Health Information Technology program.
- RHIT, RHIA, and/or CCS certification from AHIMA.
- 1 year of experience in healthcare/medical coding.
- Experience with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS.
