Coder II PRN

About the role

Responsible for capturing data from medical records for the purpose of reimbursement, statistics, research/studies, resource allocation and benchmarking. Works daily with the CDI Auditors, provides education, and is part of the Clinical Documentation Improvement process.

Responsibilities

• Assigns ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes to inpatient and/or outpatient accounts; applies CPT codes to outpatient accounts.
• Determines appropriate sequencing of codes based on coding guidelines.
• Identifies insufficient or incomplete documentation within the medical record and solicits response from physicians via queries or flagging deficiencies.
• Works closely with CDI auditors to obtain clinical documentation supporting appropriate reimbursement and increasing severity of illness.
• Collaborates on education for the team and providers.
• Communicates with the business office and monitors edits to resolve coding issues related to billing in a timely manner.
• Serves as a coding resource to other hospital personnel.
• Takes an active role in self-development.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as needed.

Requirements

• Associate degree in healthcare or Health Information Technology.
• Graduate from a Health Information Technology program.
• RHIT, RHIA, and/or CCS certification from AHIMA.
• 1 year of experience in healthcare/medical coding.
• Experience with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS.
