Job Responsibilities and Requirements
- Assigns accurate diagnostic and procedure codes according to clinical documentation and official coding guidelines for inpatient hospital accounts.
- Collaborates with the clinical documentation and quality teams to validate Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MSDRG), patient safety indicators, and hospital acquired conditions supported by physician documentation.
- Maintains work queues to ensure timely charging of records.
- Generates coding queries for clarification regarding physician documentation as needed.
- Keeps current with all coding conventions and updates.
Education and Experience
No formal education or experience required.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
- Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more).
- Frequent use of hearing and speech to communicate orally.
- Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
- Rare climbing.

- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) - American Health Information Management Assoc (AHIMA)
- Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) - American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) - American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) - American Health Information Management Assoc (AHIMA)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - American Health Information Management Assoc (AHIMA)
