Core Responsibilities
- Possess (or obtain within 6 months of hire) certification requirements to be a Maine Code Enforcement Officer, and a Licensed Plumbing Inspector
- Conduct property inspections for building safety, zoning, sanitation, plumbing, and public health compliance
- Review and issue building, land use, change of use, sign, and plumbing permits
- Investigate community complaints and initiate prompt follow-up or enforcement actions, including issuing violation notices and citations
- Review plans and reports related to construction projects to verify adherence to applicable codes and regulations, including zoning and land-use
- Prepare detailed reports documenting inspections, violations, investigations, and enforcement actions for regulatory reporting purposes
- Educate the public on compliance requirements
- Communicate clearly both orally and in writing
- Attend Select Board, Planning Board and other town meetings as needed
Experience
- Prior experience in code enforcement, building inspection, plumbing installation or a related regulatory field is preferred
- Knowledge of building standards and construction safety practices is highly desirable
- Familiarity with public health or sanitation standards is a plus
- Strong report writing skills with the ability to document findings accurately and clearly for regulatory reporting
- Experience managing compliance programs or working within regulatory frameworks enhances effectiveness in this role
